“Sponsor Reel” by Element X Creative
October 24, 2011 12:05 am

The team at Dallas based Element X Creative animated this 5-minute long sponsor reel for last week’s Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP) Southwest Awards show. If one has to sit through dozens of company logos, this is the way to go – weaving the sponsors names into a haunting and beautiful Twilight Zone-like story about a little boy who stops time and sees his home town in a whole new way. It stands on its own as one of the best CG shorts I’ve seen this year.

Complete credits for this piece after the jump.

A kinder, gentler Logorama. It’s not just a Twilight Zone-like story, this story was done on The Twilight Zone (but without the weird happy ending).

I had this idea to mix miniatures with 3D. This is a perfect example why it works so good. I love it!

OMG where are his eyes!? creepy… but awesome stuff, this short was very original. A great use of 3D. hope to see the medium get use more like this the near future. I would of liked seeing the people wake up and see consequences of his actions but ah hell. Nice touch with him shooting the breeze, made me laugh.

Rendering what would have previously been conventional, jerky stop motion as ultra smooth animation allowing for real acting may be the best use of CG technology.

I really liked this short, but I don’t agree with the implication that stop motion needs to be jerky and that a character animator can’t act through stop motion as well as through CG.

Reminds me of The Little People project: http://little-people.blogspot.com/

Probably because they’re using the same materials, but the look is very similar.

I really enjoyed this! Great aesthetic. And yet I have one question: If they’ve stopped time then why does the sun set?

dun dun dun!

Outstanding. Nice little story. Beautifully animated.

I am in agreement with Pete.
However I feel that even jerky animation can show character and be amazing, look at Rudolph. Smoother does not actually mean better, in fact this still had some very floaty animation, and some very strange looking walk cycles, other than that it was well done.

Absolutely delightful! Watched it three or four times now, and keep discovering little details. Pure inspiration.
