Animated Conan TBS Promo
August 12, 2010 11:35 am
This brief animated promo marking Conan O’Brien’s move to TBS this fall is a lot of fun. It’s a clear nod to Terry Gilliam and other Seventies TV show openings. Incorporating more animation into the show would be a great way for Conan to distinguish himself from the crowded late-night field. Was this promo done in-house at TBS? Can somebody provide credits? UPDATE: In the comments, Amy writes that mOcean created the Conan spot above. Also, here is another animated promo for the show: |
I like.
Reminds me a lot of the old Nickelodeon bumpers.
I love the Masturbating Bear at the very beginning (watch carefully!).
Made me think of ones produced for CBC Radio in the mid 80’s.

I wish Conan the best.
Amid, You Can’t Do That on Television is only technically a Seventies show. It ran from 1979-90, and didn’t air internationally until 1981. The YCDTOTV intro itself is Gilliam-influenced, if Wikipedia can be trusted.
I hope Conan’s TBS show is as good as this intro. I’m optimistic, but you know, TBS.
The You Can’t Do That On Television titles (which I had never seen before) seem to owe more than a small debt to the Terry Gilliam-animated opening titles to The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine: http://video.yahoo.com/watch/6758023/17562876
Still, for those staying tuned, here’s all the intros in YCDTOTV’s history (including the short-lived “Whatever Turns You On” series)…

I hope it goes good for Conan.
They nailed the washed out look!
Reminds me of something from a Monty Python animation.
Who put this together?
I hope it does well. That poor guy went through hell over there. Also I’m glad someone else noticed the ‘Masturbating Bear’ piloting the robot Conan head at the beginning.
I assume that’s a clear sign that the usual cast of extras and bizarre costumed characters that made Conan such a strange delight will be returning to this new show.
Feels good, man.
Spoke to Jeff Ross, (EP with Conan from Day 1) and he confirmed it was the Turner Promo Dept.
“Incorporating more animation into the show would be a great way for Conan to distinguish himself from the crowded late-night field. ”
I recall early on in his “Late Show” tenure they did a animation experiment called “Conan Babies” which was mostly unfunny and they stuck with way too long.
I doubt the TBS show will have a budget to do anything in animation more likely to succeed.
Talk shows depend on being topical and the lead time on animation is too long.
mOcean did this promo. I work there. They are awesome!
