Coo-Coo for Cocoa Puffs

A few weeks ago I posted about Chuck McCann and mentioned his memorable voice work as Sonny and Gramps in the original 1960s Cocoa Puffs cereal commercials. At the time, I couldn’t find any on the internet to link to, but thanks to our pal J.J. Sedelmaier we were able to place several on You Tube ourselves. These spots were animated by the great Jan Svochak (1926-2006), who was best known for some of the early Hawaiian Punch commercials.

It looks like he had a lot of fun animating these.

“Are we rich yet?”

“Not exactly, boy, but thanks to Cocoa Puffs, we did get a free trip to Japan.”

I love it. Thanks for posting this.

NOW I understand why his name is “Sonny” and he has a high voice. Gramps wasn’t in the commercials anymore by the time I was born. They must have put him in the Cartoon retirement home. Interesting.

God, that Sonny voice is such a perfectly weird piece of VO acting. It’s almost Mickey Mouse, but waaay more weird.

Thanks for the post.

Wow, I never knew the aliens from Quisp liked Cocoa Puffs too!

Jan Svochak may have had fun animating the Cocoa Puffs spots, but I never had any fun watching ‘em. Even as a kid, I always dreaded seeing these commercials; they looked waaay cheesier than other animated spots. Now I see the fun and energy of the animation, but when they originally aired, I couldn’t wait for them to be over.

Then there were Jay Ward’s wonderful Quisp and Quake cereal commercials; now, THOSE I cherished…and still do!

All the same, thanks for the peek, Jerry.

“How ya gonna get it up, Gramps?”
How, indeed?

Oh, wow. So I wasn’t imagining the Grandfather. :-D I was five in 1974. I do remember seeing Cocoa Puffs commercials starring Sonny and his Grandfather, though not these ones in particular. This really takes me back. Then all of the sudden Grandpa just disappeared. I always wondered why.

Cucoo for Cocoa Puffs. Chuck McCann must have done Sonny into the ’80s because I remember his voice sounding like that when I was 4 or 5.

these were way fun–but am I the only one who thinks Gramps sounds a bit like Lionel Barrymore in “It’s a Wonderful Life?” Probably just me…
