Wow, that’s really nice work.

Amazing what can be told in a short amount of time.

Nick says:
06/19/10  1:02am

this is so amazing and inspiring

Chris Webb says:
06/19/10  2:48am

Loved it.

Loved the toon rendering on the cars too.

I just loved it.

Steve Schnier says:
06/19/10  3:32am

Brilliant! Bravo!

Seriously, one of the best things I’ve seen. Get’s the message across clearly yet stylishly. Great design, direction. Acting and music were spot on.

Roberto says:
06/19/10  3:47am

Pretty cool stuff!

Makes me wonder why there isn’t more cinema noir in animated features.

Well, I guess it’s not very family oriented. Wish Brad Bird had done his The Spirit or Ray Gunn.

Allan Turner says:
06/19/10  4:01am

Wow! Why can’t there be more cartoons like this?! I don’t mean instead of all the great stuff out there already, I mean in ADDITION to it!

Paul N says:
06/19/10  4:43am

Aaron Long says:
06/19/10  5:24am

That was awesome.

Richard says:
06/19/10  5:30am

Hey thats really fun – thanks for posting

Kyle says:
06/19/10  5:56am

Beautifully made all round. Very clever use of narration and noir tropes to tell a complete story in 50 seconds too.

R.Dress says:
06/19/10  6:28am

Fantastic! I love the animation and the design of the detective.

DavetheRave says:
06/19/10  6:54am

Very cool! Hope a feature will be made like that someday!

David Nethery says:
06/19/10  7:07am

Beautiful work. Love the design, the animation, and the pacing of the entire piece.

Steve Menke says:
06/19/10  7:28am

Good luck to the short films — they’ve got a hard act to follow!

erlab says:
06/19/10  7:36am

What?!!? That is unreal!

Katella Gate says:
06/19/10  7:51am

Great short, but a pointer from somebody that lived in Palm Springs for 15 years: If you find yourself in a nearly empty movie theater, and a big guy sits down next to you in a trench coat…

paburrows says:
06/19/10  7:52am

Man that was awesome!

Rufus says:
06/19/10  8:03am

Now take whoever made this, give him a million bucks or two and make it a feature film. I’d pay a lot to see this.

Sabrina says:
06/19/10  8:35am

Beautiful…loved every second of that.

Andrew Chesworth says:
06/19/10  8:46am

Wow, thanks for the kind words everybody! This project was an incredibly enjoyable experience for me, and really a dream come true. I got to work with an incredibly passionate and dedicated team of artists and performers, and my producer Danny Robashkin at MAKE deserves a special thanks for allowing the project the time, attention, and care it was given. The influences are spot that people pointed out – I’m one of those people who just pined for a Brad Bird ‘The Spirit’ and ‘Ray Gunn’. Thanks for watching! And Jerry, thank you for the post!

Dani Boy says:
06/19/10  8:47am

So good! I especially liked the little tied-up dweeb.

red pill junkie says:
06/19/10  8:50am

Make this a full motion picture please :)

Brian D. Scott says:
06/19/10  8:57am

That was awesome!

Justin says:
06/19/10  9:04am

That was so fresh and inspiring after being beaten with that Tangled trash and Smurfy shit.

Kazzer says:
06/19/10  9:04am

andrew chesworth directed this, and I’d give a million dollars if i had it to see this as a movie. gorgeous stuff, cograts to justin weber, aaron quist, alec mueller jordan hill and the rest of the team! this is the best thing i’ve seen in a long long while.

Charles Brubaker says:

Whoever made this sure has quite a talent! I wonder how long it took that person to make this, because it was really well animated and designed.

Taber Dunipace says:
06/19/10  9:26am

Absolutely awesome! Way to go Andrew and MAKE!

Terry Beatty says:
06/19/10  9:45am

It’s great to see so many of my former MCAD students doing such fantastic work. I’m taking credit for teaching you guys everything you know — even if it’s not true.

tomm says:
06/19/10  10:06am

nicely done indeed

BJ Crawford says:
06/19/10  10:34am

This is fantastic work from start to finish!

VERY well done.

BobT says:
06/19/10  11:10am

I love it!

I downloaded the quicktime version , so I could watch it over and over again. I can also take in every single frame, one at the time.

The only problem I have with it is that there isn’t more of it.
I’d love it to be feature length.

So good.

Andy Gonsalves says:
06/19/10  12:55pm

Wonderful animation and characters!

Kyle says:
06/19/10  1:20pm

Raven M. says:

Clueless says:

Holy expletive! That was awesome. Rethinking my decision to go to MCAD :P Completely refreshing, genuine, and well crafted.

Uncle Stan says:
06/19/10  4:43pm

Bravo Andrew…mature, dramatic, with some good punch!

Scarabim says:
06/19/10  6:30pm

VERY nice!!!!!

Mom and Dad says:
06/19/10  6:32pm

We are sooo proud of you Andrew! The final product is incredible! The talent and creativity is over the top. We agree that it would be a fabulous feature film! :)

Virgilio says:
06/19/10  6:37pm

Bravo! Amazing work. Every second is filled with joy. :)

Congratulations for the team that made it.

Andy W says:
06/19/10  8:29pm

Great Stuff Andrew….curious what software did you use for the animation?

Justin Weber says:
06/19/10  11:05pm

The 2D animation was hand drawn right into Photoshop on cintiqs, 3D props (such as the cars) were made in Maya, and the whole thing was composited in After Effects. I was fortunate enough to work on this as an animator. Andrew is a wonderful director and was able to pull a lot of great work out of the whole team!

Akbar Shahzad says:
06/20/10  12:48am

This is brilliant. I’ve always thought animation would be perfect for capturing the essence of film noir (I mean, look at comic books) but, until now, I’d never seen it done. And it only took 50 seconds. Well done, Andrew Chesworth! It’ll be a hell of a festival if any of the shorts are better than this one.

Steve Segal says:
06/20/10  5:51am

I love the design, the loose but controlled animation, the spare use of color, the scene transitions…heck I like everything. Richard Williams made an excellent commercial for a breath mint that used a noir look with line drawings and tongue in cheek narration, this was better.

Justin Spurlin says:
06/20/10  6:23am

Wouldn’t you say that Palm Springs Festival ad is, what?—100 times more appealing? too conservative?—than the feature-film trailers you show? Would you rather see a feature film that looked like that (and what a shame we won’t be getting one) or a feature film that looks like “The Smurfs”?

Rooniman says:
06/20/10  10:33am

I feel totally refreshed by this fantastic piece of art! I give a 100 out of 5 stars. It made me forget about the crappy modern CGI films that plagued my mind before.

Ixintro says:
06/20/10  11:08am

Great advert by what looks to be really good studio, from Minneapolis no less!

Daniel Smith says:
06/20/10  12:48pm

That was awesome. It reminds me of Batman the Animated Series. Dripping with style and packs a punch.

Chris Powell says:
06/20/10  1:02pm

would LOVE to see more feature 2-d with this level of production value. great portrayal of the genre!

Brad Bird says:
06/20/10  2:17pm

I also really love that the cleanup line is sharp without being tight and lifeless. It has that great “fresh-from-the-oven” feel of pencil tests.

David Breneman says:
06/20/10  2:54pm

That’s a real gem, Mr. Chesworth. You and your team should be proud.

Caresse says:
06/20/10  7:04pm

WOW! That’s all I have to say!

Chuz says:
06/21/10  2:05am

Great short… loved it.

Kent Tan says:
06/21/10  4:52am

Nice! What a brilliant and creative way to introduce the event. :)

Sean says:
06/21/10  6:47am

Someone definitely needs to fund a major motion picture by Chesworth! That was some great stuff!

james madison says:
06/21/10  8:06am

Bravo! Excellent work. I’m inspired!

Uncle Phil Rynda says:
06/21/10  8:43am

Nice’n meaty. Awesome!

Ben K. says:
06/21/10  9:27am

I know everyone has said it already, but damn was that an excellent 50 seconds. Congratulations to the production team!

Max Million says:
06/21/10  8:53pm

Judging by these raves, maybe it’s time for a quality 2D revival. The rub is that would really have to be quality.

Emily says:
06/21/10  10:05pm

Wow, really beautiful!

Carol says:
06/22/10  5:49am

This was certainly a work of passion and thought..your skill has matured through the years and it shows.

Carol Brewer says:
06/22/10  6:03am

This is certainly a work of passion and thorough thought..your skill has matured through the years we are fortunate to have such a creative mind in our midst. I have enjoyed your work through the years and look forward to seeing more of you in the future.
The short was meaty and energitic the meaning delivered with spectacular design and the use of color was devine. I must say I really enjoyed this animation with gusto. The shooting scene was to the point and finished with surprise. I liked the kisses placed all over the detectives face. I chuckled. The body of movement was exciting the scene changes right on target kept my attention. The design of the characters are fabulous, rounds where needed and square shaped angles on the detective face gave him a strength of character before he showed his true colors. It amazed me how this short delivered a story that was power packed. Thanks for entertaining me.
I just marvel at your gift and always have.I look forward to your career in this field may all your dreams come true.

Sherrie Warren says:
