Trailer for The Beatles Rock Band
June 1, 2009 7:55 pm

The actual game play in the forthcoming game, The Beatles Rock Band, isn’t that impressive to me, but the game’s just-released trailer is beautiful and visually exciting. It was made at Passion Pictures with the Gorillaz crew aboard, including director Pete Candeland and animator Robert Valley. Backgrounds are by Alberto Mielgo. If anybody has full credits, please share.

UPDATE: Download a hi-res version of the commercial HERE!

Damnnnn! That was some graceful animation, a real treat to watch.

This kicks ass on so many levels.
I dig the whole thing. But Gawd, I love the 2d animation, layout & design in the beginning sequence. Nice work folks : ) More please.

that was amazing

JDW says:

Well, I’ll agree, this animated trailer was awesomely beautiful and far more appealing than Yellow Submarine, but the gameplay, in terms of character models and design is a huge step over what Guitar Hero and Rock Band currently offer.

P.S. Amid, I see you changed your “hardly impresses” comment. What gives?

Gobo says:

Really fantastic looking. Some of the design elements here carry over to the game itself, which looks top-notch; I’m certainly excited by the gameplay — three-part harmonies! Awesome!

perhaps a yellow submarine relaunch wouldn’t such a horrible idea?

Tony Claar says:
06/1/09  9:28pm

wow….and I mean, WOW! Being a Beatle fan since I was very young, and following ( carefully LISTENING to ) everything they ever did, I am blown away by this fantastic animation. It truly follows in the right spirit of the band; it really rocks, flows, amazes, and glows….congratulations to the superb artists here. As any of the Beatles would most likely say, “Right ON! “

Jason says:

God that was GREAT. What’s weird is that, some time back, I dreamed I was in Liverpool on a night when the Beatles were performing in The Cavern Club. I’ve never been to Liverpool, never seen any pictures of it, but the scenery in that trailer looks so much like the scenery in my dream it’s downright eerie. Anyway, that trailer is beautiful. Odd choice of songs, perhaps, but visually it…well…rocks. And I too would love to see more of the 2D Beatles featured in it. Man…it’s hard to believe that two of The Boys are gone now…

Amy Mebberson says:

I had to wonder if the Gorillaz guys were involved in this when I saw this. The animation is awesome and totally fitting for the Beatles.

As a keen Rock Band player and Beatles nut, I cannot WAIT for this to come out.

Cyber Fox says:

Don’t the let the Green X (X-BOX 360) logo fool you
The Beatles: Rock Band is NOT a X-BOX 360 exclusive
It’s releasing on September 9th, 2009 (9-9-09, like Revoultion No. 9 Get It?) for not only the X-BOX 360 but also the Nintendo Wii and the PlayStation 3

Slash Halen says:

This is indeed a huge treat.

If any of you have played Rock Band 1 or 2, you will know that the animations/graphics/whatever are absolute trash. I swear to god, Rock Band 1 was SOOOO ugly, my eyes melted.

But they’re still fun games.

Jonah Sidhom says:
06/1/09  10:10pm

That has got to be one of the best video game trailers ever

Mal Evans says:
06/1/09  10:19pm

Very well done and with far more fitting production values than in either their Saturday morning series or Yellow Submarine.

Jon Knutson says:
06/1/09  11:01pm

Awesome trailer… better than the one on the website, if you ask me! I would absolutely love it if these guys made a full-length movie that was just animated Beatles performances, especially of songs they never performed live!

Chris Kennett says:

Mind officially “blown”

roque says:

Now THAT’S how you bring back 2D…

uli says:

Beautiful. Well done Pete and Alberto and the rest of the crew.

Isaac says:
06/2/09  12:24am

This is the best animation to have graced a videogame in a long time. Actually, I can’t think of anything that comes close.

(the in-game footage is standard fare, though)

Doofus says:
06/2/09  1:36am

That was INCREDIBLE! These guys are really raising the bar on videogame content. That’s what using videogames as an art form looks like – can’t deny that.

slowtiger says:
06/2/09  1:46am

Nicely done, definitely, especially if one tries to nail down all the sources and influences (See the Dalí in the last sequence? http://www.stedentipsvoortrips.nl/kunsthistorie/surrea2.jpg). But I’m really glad that Yellow Submarine was done the way it was, and not in this 3D-CocaColaAd-heavy-compositing fashion. The first half, however, seems to be a style a feature film could be made in.

Martin Bell says:
06/2/09  3:57am

This makes me want to cry with happiness.

Randy Koger says:
06/2/09  4:30am

That RULES!

Beautiful work set to wonderful music.

Have to agree with Isaac – NOTHING comes close to this.

Wonderful! Thank you!!

Brian says:
06/2/09  5:10am

I want to make something like this one day. My jaw literally dropped after “Here Comes the Sun” started.

Dennis Sisterson says:
06/2/09  5:12am

Fantastic stuff. We have such great animation and design talent in this country it’s a pity someone can’t find the writers and funding to put it to work on a few features.

Doug says:
06/2/09  6:19am

This is truly wonderful! I would gladly watch an entire feature done in this manner – taking on the world’s most iconic and talented songwriters and performers in the history of rock/pop music was no easy task I’m sure. It looked like it sprang from The Beatles own imaginations and that is the magic of this animation. Thank you Gorillaz crew!

Scott Morse says:
06/2/09  7:52am

That makes me want to make things.

Iritscen says:
06/2/09  7:56am

Great stuff; if only videogames could look as good as this trailer. For the most part, I think we lost something important when we made the jump to 3D with the 32-bit generation. Forget polys and bump maps and dynamic shadowing, imagine the room in memory for 2D animation on a modern system! Or maybe a really good cel-shader for 3D models (it’s hard to find a genuinely convincing one).

Aerial Flyer says:
06/2/09  8:07am

I LOVE anything Passion pictures does, period.

Dagan says:
06/2/09  8:13am

Woooooooooow!!!

What a beautifully designed and animated piece of work… If this doesn’t fuel the fire in your belly to do great work, nuthin’ will.

Bravo, Passion crew. I don’t think I have ever seen something created there that I didn’t love. But this one piece takes the cake… pure PERFECTION.

Sara says:
06/2/09  8:46am

I’ve never owned any of the iterations of Guitar Hero or Rock Band and I don’t really have the space in my living room for a full Rock Band setup. The game itself looks nice, pretty solid 3D video game animation, but nothing mind blowing.

If the entire game looked like this, however, I would buy it regardless.

jim m. says:
06/2/09  9:18am

The piece lost me as soon as the camera started moving all over the place, but the 2D animated bits were animated, directed and designed beautifully. Congrats.

Emilie says:
06/2/09  9:24am

I couldn’t move. Bravo to the Passion people. This is completely addictive!

The trailer reminds me more of the show “Love” from Cirque du Soleil than the Yellow Submarine movie though…

:D thanks! This trailer made my day!

Jorge Garrido says:
06/2/09  9:42am

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t play video games at all, but this looks so cool that I might buy this game and this game only.

I only hope the game doesn’t gave too too much of a bias towards the “later” Beatles. My favourite period is their first four album.

They should at least have the complete “A Hard Days Night” album, if they’re gonna have the complete “Abbey Road.”

The character models are terrific, but wouldn’t it be cool if you cool unlock the SatAM cartoon models and the yellow submarine models?

Shane Glines says:

Beautiful! I could see Robert Valley all over this- he consistently blows my mind with his talent.

He’s only getting better all the time.

valley/candeland are a really amazing duo. i’m always pretty excited to see what they’re working on.

doug holverson says:

If The Beatles metaphysical mystique was real…

I’m groovin’ to that last minute or so. Besides that Yellow Submarine and Dali influence, is anybody who isn’t me seeing a bit of Kroffts too?

doug holverson says:
06/2/09  2:36pm

Oh yeah, the english garden on top of what I think might be an embellished Ganesha also reminds me of the boat on top of the giant plodding ogre in Time Bandits.

Brian Kidd says:
06/2/09  3:39pm

I don’t think the gameplay footage is so bad. They’ve done a decent job creating environments, costumes, and hairstyles that go along with concerts and promotional films from the time period. I think the only things that really bother me are the lack of decent lip-sync and a general sense of blandness to the model designs. It’s about what I expected from Rock Band. At least you can do harmonies!

As for the opening cinematic: gorgeous. I loved every second of it, especially once the animators and designers were able to cut loose during the psychedelic sections. I’d kill to see another animated Beatles film done by this studio. A sequel to YELLOW SUBMARINE would be fantastic. I mean it isn’t as if the Beatles did their own voice work in the original film. Ah well, a Beatle fan can dream.
