Bruce Bickford

This nine-minute excerpt from Monster Road, the documentary about the life and times of stop-motion genius Bruce Bickford, really makes me want to see the rest of the film. Also, a dvd of Bickford’s 28-minute tour de force Prometheus’ Garden, complete with a newly produced making-of documentary, is nearing completion, according to this blog.

You haven’t seen Monster Road? Oh man, you’ve got to fix that. It’s a terrific documentary, and Bickford himself is way off the curve– animation doesn’t get more independent than this!

Monster Road is amazing, it’s really a shame that not many people have seen it.

Actually, the DVD of Prometheus’ Garden can ALREADY be ordered, it just hasn’t been advertised anywhere.

i actually just watched this documentary in my experimental animation class yesterday. it’s an incredible documentary. Bruce Bickford is a crazy genius, with extra crazy….but the good kind.

Monster Road is fantastic. In addition to highlighting Bickford’s amazing, obsessive animation, it also highlights his father and their relationship. It is one of my all-time favorite documentaries… beautiful, inspiring and profound.

MONSTER ROAD is killer! I got it years ago (along with Honker’s INCREDIBLE MR. BICKFORD), and it’s been on either IFC or SUNDANCE more than once. Bickford is like no other animator, and his techniques can’t practically be supplanted with CG. Bickford stuff is hypnotic. His history with Zappa is super interesting, if you care to look it up.

Zappa is one of my faves, but I don’t care for much of his INCREDIBLE MR BICKFORD soundtrack. I stripped the audio and replaced it with BRAIN SALAD SURGERY. It works better.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched The Amazing Mr. Bickford, both as a fan of Frank Zappa and as a fan of Bruce Bickford. His animation is nothing short of extraordinary, especially considering that the man does everything himself (which is shown in great detail in Monster Road). Bickford’s other collaborations with Zappa can be found on DVD (The Dub-Room Special and Baby Snakes), but it helps if you can appreciate FZ’s music.

Mr. Bickford visited the Will Vinton Studio, home of Claymation, during my time there. He was considering doing some directing and later thought it was not his element. I was awed and frightened by his work.

I agree that Monster Road is an incredible film. I’ve seen one of Bruce Bickford’s clay sculptures in person and it was not much bigger than a grapefruit. Amazing work by a very mysterious guy!
