Cordell Barker on Runaway
April 24, 2009 9:15 am

Winnipeg animator Cordell Barker (The Cat Came Back, Strange Invaders) is back with a new film. Runaway will have its World Premiere at the 48th International Critics’ Week (May 14-22) in Cannes.

I’m a big fan of Barker’s cartoons. The NFB just post this promotional video (below) where he explains his latest film, and his creative process. More information and clips on Runaway, and downloads of his previous films are on posted here.

Humor is always negative? Oooooohkaaaay. Can’t say I agree with that viewpoint. His work looks good though.

Ahhh .. the animators mind at work. lol.
We tend to go there, don’t we… ;-)

The nice thing I have found, is that as I have gotten older with more experience in life and work, things have gotten more positive.

Hmmm…. maybe i’m slowly going insane… being a positive artist ?

Six years? Wow, if America only subsidized animated filmmakers to the NFB’s level. Glad he decided to use a train motif rather than a sinking ship. Winsor McCay already did that one, and his cartoon didn’t get many laughs.

His first two films are fantastic…some of the best shorts since the golden era.

It’s interesting that he seems to have changed his style for this one, but all the energy still seems to be there. Can’t wait to see it.

Cordell Barker’s work floors me. Great ideas, character animation, beautifully executed, and FUNNY!

Can’t wait to see the new film.

Our company contributed a very small part to Cordell’s film and let me tell you that there is no easier guy to work with. And having known him for almost 30 years I can tell you..his humor does come from the negative. A negative, dark, bitter cave deep within his soul.

Yet he makes hilarious films. Go figger.

A new Cordell Barker film is always a welcome event. It may be worth mentioning that the uber-talented Ben Charest (Triplettes de Belleville) did the music for the short —that’s a great bonus!
