Happy Birthday, Howard Beckerman
December 26, 2009 9:30 am
Howard Beckerman is the king of New York animation; a teacher, a mentor and a living legend. It was his birthday yesterday, on Christmas, and to celebrate the occasion we present The Trip (1967) which Beckerman wrote, animated and co-designed — another hidden gem produced during the Shamus Culhane era at Paramount. Howard recalled: “The film was originally titled “The Vacation”, but Paramount changed it to “The Trip” and it always gets confused with the Peter Fonda live-action production.” Happy Birthday, Howard! |
Happy Birthday/Merry Christmas Mr. Beckerman. I love your work
To my good friend Howard, I hope you had a Merry Christmas & a Happy Birthday. Enjoy the rest of your break & I’ll see you in class in a few weeks! Take care!
Happy Birthday Howard! From your favorite illegitimate son.
Howard’s a terrific feller and tells a better animation story than anyone in the city.
“The Trip” is one of the best from the late-era Paramount.
Really, despite Shamus Culhane being listed as a director, this is really Howard Beckerman’s film.
Happy Birthday, Howard. All the best for the new year.
I was hoping the ape would kick the shit out of the boss at the end.
Happy Birthday, Mr. Beckerman! You were the best teacher I had during my time at SVA and your work continues to be an inspiration.

Among my very favorite teachers at SVA 77-81 (and my teachers included Harvy Kurtzman, Will Eisner and art spiegleman-no slouches they). You will always have a warm place in my heart!

Happy Birthday Howard and MANY, MANY more!! You have been and always will be an inspiration to us all!
Seeing this cartoon for the first time reminded me of a greeting card. It made sense when I re-read Culhane’s book, where he did mention Beckerman’s background in greeting card designs.
He still knows how to work a room during a large lecture. Happy Birthday!
