Marvcards
March 15, 2007 6:00 pm
Animator Marv Newland dropped us a note about his new art project/website, Marvcards, which he says is part of “a little film in the works.” That’s what I like about Marv, he’s always pushing the envelope—or in this case, postcards. |
Not to detract from the great illustration, but the stamp is equally awesome. It features André Franquin’s Gaston La Gaffe, a creation that turns 50 this year. Some of Franquin’s other characters were adapted for animation, including Spirou and Fantasio and Marsupilami. No one has made a proper animated adaptation in short or long form of Gaston’s antics, but someone should.

I wonder how many Americans even know of Marsupilami past the Disney cartoon series from the 90’s? :-) It’s neat just seeing those tapes along with Marv’s cool illustrations. I should’ve thought about doing this too!
I wish i got mail like this…
Here you can see two more cards by Marv.
By the way, Gaston Lagaffe was briefly published in the U.S. by Fantagraphics as “Gomer Goof” in their short-lived comic magazines “Prime Cuts” and “Graphic Story Monthly”.
Sweet! Marv was an awesome teacher at VFS. Had lots of cool stories to tell and was a great mentor. Go Marv!
I had the pleasure of working alongside Marv several years ago. A great talent and a really nice guy. If you like the postcards you should see his sketchbooks.
