Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli has announced its next animated film, an adaptation of Mary Norton’s 1952 classic kid’s book, The Borrowers. Miyazaki-san will produce, but the actual direction will fall to one of his key animators Hiromasa Yonebayashi. The movie will be titled Karigurashi no Arrietty (aka Arrietty Borrows Everything). Toho will release the film summer 2010 in Japan, with a US release (home video?) via Disney to follow. For more information, check out the mini interview with studio head Toshio Suzuki at the Ghibli World blog.

(Thanks, Andrew Osmond and Liam)

The title might be better translated as “Arrietty the Borrower”? karigurashi is like, ‘one who lives by borrowing,’ ie a Borrower.

I’m curious to see more!

The Borrowers? Wow, I remember reading a few of the books when I was a kid, then I breifly remember an animated series, and I know I was 12 when the John Goodman movie came out which was kind of funny to see John Goodman get the crap beat out of him by rat people.

Maybe I’m confusing this with the other franchise with pretty much the exact same plot, “The Littles?”

YAAAAA!!! Im so excited!

I really hope this one isn’t a home video release. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Ponyo in theaters. It was a treat.

Ooo, how exciting! I loved The Borrowers as a kid. Then again I could probably watch paint dry for an hour and half if it was made by Miyazaki.

Sounds interesting. As well as the books,I remember the made-for-tv
movie with Eddie Albert, the tv series with Ian Holm, and the movie.
I’ll be very interested in seeing the result with Ghibli’s version.

Awesome! I love these stories, and look forward to seeing his version of them.

Lara Smith says:

I wonder if Disney would. This is their first opportunity to release a non-Miyazaki, first-run Studio Ghibli movie in North American theatres, as legal restrictions prevented them from doing so with Earthsea.

Robert Kohr says:

Yea though Earthsea was terrible.

Not excited here to see the umpteenth version of the Borrowers. Snooze.

The Borrowers books helped to inspire John Peterson’s books about the Littles, later a TV series. The first Borrowers adaptation was Hallmark Hall of Fame from ‘73 (Eddie Albert, etc.) and there were also a couple mini-series (TNT & BBC) in the 90s (comic Richard Lewis hosted the
US presentatons) and finally the 97 film with Goodman (also featured
Hugh “House” Laurie and about 3 actors who would later be in the Harry Potter films.

Many of the comments on YouTube’s clips of that film revolve around how cute Tom Felton (then a preteen) was.

I think Donovan Freberg
did a voice for The Littles.

I’m pretty excited about this one, will be keeping a close eye…

It’s also, perhaps more importantly, also co-written by Miyazaki Hayao, from memory, of a novel he last read over a decade ago, relocated to contemporary Japan – all of which suggests that it’s going to be a stretch to describe it as an adaptation. But unlike Whisper of the Heart the storyboards (of which there are a few examples either those or image boards at GhibliWorld.com) are by the director rather than him.

Borrowers+Ghibli=GOLD
I hope:)
I loved the 90s miniseries as a kid!
Miyazaki always seems to like the same things as me.. Anne of Green Gables, Heidi, Pippi Longstocking… TOTORO! :)

Will Arrietty be barefoot in one scene?
