Speed Racer Goes Crazy

The Wachowski Brothers Speed Racer movie opens this week. I hope the new film is as much fun as the video below. In it, Speed Racer goes psycho. Brew reader John Kearns created it using only footage and soundtrack from the original Tatsunoko cartoon. I love the original series. It’s one of my guilty pleasures. SciFiJapan.com has just post a number of excellent SPEED RACER reference pieces well worth reading, and bookmarking. The first one is nice piece on the creation of the Tatsunoko studio and the origins of the Speed Racer character. The second post is a concise overview of the series, characters and the Mach 5. Could someone tell me why the Mach 5 in the upcoming Speed Racer movie has a number 6 on it?
FINALLY! Someone’s made SENSE of a Japanese cartoon.
That is wonderfully crazy animation. The new animated series could learn from it.
I wish Geico would re-air that one Speed Racer commercial, where Speed finds out the bridge is out…. but his girl saved a bunch of money on car insurance.
Speaking of puns, I didn’t notice mentioned in the articles the one big “bilingual” pun in the series: “Go” is Japanese for “five,” hence the number on the car.
Reminds me (rather woefully) of the Speed Racer rave track from the early 90’s where they used samples from the show to imply a rather… ahem… intimate situation for Speed and Trixie.

That was the best laugh I’ve had all week – thanks for posting that! I’ve been a fan of the series since I was a little kid. I don’t know how the movie will turn out, but I’m definitely going to see it. The whole “car-fu” thing looks absolutely over-the-top, which is exactly what it should be.
As for why there’s a 6 on one of the cars in the film, that’s because there’s a Mach 5 and a Mach 6 – they’re for different race tracks. (There’s also a 4, if you watch the trailers carefully.) There were a few episodes of the original series where Speed drove specialty cars and other vehicles too.

I love this! Of course, I’m a huge fan of the original series. It’s loaded with charm and is actually exciting once you get your head wrapped around the dream-logic world in which Speed lives.
Why do you feel guilty about liking the original Speed Racer? We loved it as kids. I showed my kids the DVDs, and they love it, too.
It’s a great example of pure story-telling overcoming budget animation and odd translations. It’s great entertainment, even if it’s not Looney Tunes.
God how I hated that cartoon!
Love this! The only thing that stood out was the flipped Mach 5 just after the halfway point. I’d also forgotten how beautiful the animation was, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen SR.
Can’t wait to see the film.

Looking at some other animation forums, I’m a bit disheartened that a lot of people today haven’t seen the original SPEED RACER, and are being introduced to it by the awful new show SPEED RACER: THE NEXT GENERATION (which looks more like “Kappa Racer” than anything else). I even got ToonZone’s attention!
The late Tatsuo Yoshida’s one of my favorite creators. He was the creator of GATCHAMAN (AKA: BATTLE OF THE PLANETS/G-FORCE), CASSHAN (CASSHERN), POLYMER and the bizarre and wacky TIME BOKAN series! Interesting bit of trivia: Yoshida did a Superman manga back in the 50s (to capitalize on the Japanese airing of the TV series)! I don’t know if it was authorized or not. (Jirou Kuwata, another fave of mine, did a Batman manga for Shounen King Magazine in 1966.)
I’m definitely going to see the SPEED RACER movie when it’s released.
The Wachowski bros certainly put a lot of effort into making Speed Racer… the movie overall looked and felt like a cross between anime, a kaleidoscope, that Flintstones movie, a video game and the Dukes of Hazard
