Tezuka Shorts on iTunes
by amid
July 2, 2008 10:20 am

While browsing iTunes yesterday, I noticed that they’ve licensed many of the independent shorts produced by Japanese cartooning legend and Astro Boy creator Osamu Tezuka. These include some difficult-to-find efforts such as Tales of the Street Corner (1962) and Pictures At an Exhibition (1966, image above), both of which are more notable for their rarity than their quality as shorts, though they do each offer some cool design work. The films can be purchased on the Tezuka Productions page (link goes to iTunes) while more info about the shorts can be found on this website.

For those of you who are part of a worldwide DVD purchasing audience where DVD region and video format don’t matter, Tezuka’s independent experimental films were released on DVD last year by an Australian label. You can order direct from the distributor here: http://www.madman.com.au/actions/catalogue.do?releaseId=7289&method=view

This news has been around last year when I heard of them being on iTunes myself, it’s better than nothing I would say for those who don’t have an clue how to get a non-region 1 disc to work on their players.

Yep, I have that DVD, superb stuff. I really liked Broken Down Film and Legend of the Forest, the latter giving a clever mini history lesson of animation by changing styles with every scene. I like that.

Thanks for this, guys. I have Broke Down Film and Jumping on an old VHS, but will update and add the others ASAP.
I wish they were available someplace other than iTunes- you can burn a disc of them but it only plays on your iTunes! Kinda defeats the purpose. I had hoped to add them to the DVD I’m compiling of Brewfilms- hey, when are youse guys gonna add more of those great discoveries here?

Wow!
Thanks for pointing that out.
So much great stuff.

DRM is a sad thing. You only wish some company would release them to DVD here. Best I once saw of any of these shorts get a decent release outside Expanded Entertainment’s releases was Right Stuf’s VHS edition for “Legend of the Forest” but that was 14 years ago, they could’ve followed it up with other shorts but it never happened.

Thanks so much for that link! I love everything by Osamu Tezuka, and I’ve never seen these before. I can’t wait to get these!
