What is the most valuable piece of artistic advice you have ever received, and from who?
“‘Work smart, not hard.’ In school, I thought that the best and brightest illustrators were the ones who worked themselves to death and never went to bed before 3 AM. For some reason a lot of students have this romantic idea of being fueled solely by working really hard, but nothing in life works like that. It took a lot of horror stories from upper classmen to convince me to try finding a balance in my work and social life, and to try taking care of myself for once. Making art is all about problem solving–the best thing you can do for yourself is to strive for good time management so that you’re all there when it’s time to get your work done. Working is important–but so is living your life. It’s a really simple piece of advice, and I think multiple people have talked to me about this, so I can’t really pinpoint who I first heard it from, but I’m always doing my best work when I’m really taking it to heart.”
