“Learn Our History” by Mike Huckabee

If you thought Superbook was didactic… is reporting that former minister-turned-Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is producing a series of Learn Our History animated videos that tell the “true” story of American history, the story our “schools are afraid to tell”. Says Huckabee:

“Some teachers and education boards are using history and social studies classes as their soap box to promote their own political opinions and biases! Using animated videos that kids love, this series tells the tales of…a group of friends who create an incredible time machine that takes them back in time to relive history in the making.”

This one is going right into the Cartoon Dump. It’s so poor, it looks like a Saturday Night Live parody… but it’s for real! Here’s a sample:

(Thanks, Frank Conniff)

  • Craig D

    I mean…

    Just “wow.”

    • Hulk

You took the words right out of my mouth!

    • Well said… I feel the same.

      • Chris Sobieniak

I think I need to wash out my eyes!

  • Wow, what’s up, helmet directly lifted from a Warhammer 40k Blood Angel Space Marine?

  • P.U.! Talk about soapboxes! Love the racist depiction of the thug: “Gimme yo’ money!”

  • Tom Pope

That is one HEINOUS Reagan design.

    • Funkybat

Agreed. I think whether you love, hate, or are indifferent to Ronald Reagan, you have to admit that character is really creepy looking. I kept focusing on the overly-detailed parts inside his mouth. I imagine it would really hurt if he bit you.

  • Mike Kazaleh

    This is just sick.

  • My first response was a stream of all-caps profanity, but I backspaced over that.

    Their eyes!

At least part of the crew must have been horrified and amused by this. Or was it outsourced to a production staff that didn’t even understand what it was about?

  • michael

Was the animation done in the US or overseas?

  • EB

    Saturday TV Fun-house, TV Fun-house!

Lorne can run this as is.

  • This is a disgusting example of animation! Ewww!

  • Rodan

As a Republican and a conservative…even I have to say that this is as goofy as all getup. Mr. Huckabee, forgetaboutit!!!

  • Ted

Were there disco branded tank tops in the disco era?

  • Rufus

~A gangster in a Disco tanktop

    • Chris Sobieniak

They certainly make 1977 sound like a really terrible year for me to be born on!

  • This is the some of the best accidental comedy I’ve seen in a long time. They should make a full season of these and show them on Adult Swim. I wouldn’t vote for you Mike Huckabee, but I’d watch the shit out of your cartoon.

    • Funkybat

Well, now that Huckabee has declared that he won’t be running for President, he can focus on doing more episodes of this series! Callooh Callay, O Frabjous day!

  • Chuck Howell

It gave me goosebumps! Then I broke out in a cold sweat and threw up…

    • Chris Sobieniak

The Bible does that to me sometimes.

  • C. Stulz

Talk about using history as a soap box to promote ones own political opinions and biases – to paraphrase Huckabee the genius behind this.

  • Christopher Cook

The kid in the back in that preview shot looks like T.J. from “Recess.”

  • GAWD !

  • Killskerry

It looks like Adult Swim’s Drinky Crow Show if it had been cobbled together by a group of extremely creepy, possibly racist Republican conservatives just learning to use the computer.

  • eeteed

“…a group of friends who create an incredible time machine that takes them back in time to relive history…”

    that’s a typo, right?

relive was supposed to be REVISE, right?

  • Somebody turned money… into THAT?!?

    • Inkan1969

Yeah. Is THIS their idea of responsible spending? :-P

  • Plays like a big joke. Is this real!?

  • Skeptical

I’m really struggling to believe that this is a sincere effort by sincere people. Please let it turn out to be a subversive parody by sneaky progressives.

If it is serious, it makes me even more depressed about the beliefs and thought processes of some of the far right. This is so freaking out there that I defy anyone to try to do a mash-up/parody of this mess. I’m not sure you could intentionally make it any more insane and ridiculous than it is now.

  • cbat628

I had to stop the video at the part where I saw the kids riding down a stark, incredibly bleak “Washington D.C.” Or at least whatever culture-impaired background designer thought it looked like.

I mean… jeez. It was as if they were traveling down this empty void where all sense of hope is gone, and anyone who lived there died with all the color.

There’s a metaphor in there, but I’m not sure what it is.

    • Iritscen

I don’t think you understood the purpose of the art style. You see, it was such an economically-impaired time before Reagan came along that they couldn’t even afford texture maps in the inner cities.

      • cbat628

Of course! It makes perfect sense now. :)

      • Funkybat

        LOL at the texture-mapping comment!

Sadly, I remember going to D.C. pretty often in the early 80s, and a lot of the city did kind of look like that. Still did until about 10-15 years ago. Of course, that had less to do with the national or even local economy than it did with endemic problems with D.C. and its governance. Still, there were no disco-wifebeater-wearing thugs slinging knives that I could see…

  • This third season of Xavier: Renegade Angel is a complete departure from the first two.

  • Guess he hasn’t heard of Go! Animate yet. Could have saved him some money. A surprising oversite from a conservative.

    • Dr. Ivo Robotnik

Someone, quick! Suggest this to Huckabee!

  • Anoniguy

The real history, the one that republican budget cuts to education make it too EXPENSIVE to tell!

Man, what a shameless, foolish thing to make.

  • Steve Gattuso

The real lesson this thing gives is into the mindset of the GOP. And it’s a frightening lesson.

  • Brody

In case anyone thinks this is parody, here’s Bumbly Walleyes himself, introducing and endorsing this fantastic product:

    • Funkybat

There’s an “Origins of WWII” one on the site, almost as good as the Reagan one.

      Highlights include:

-the kids looking over pro-US propaganda posters, with a black girl saying “You go, Girl!” to the iconic “Rosie the Riveter” poster.

-what appear to be modern-day skinheads narcing the kids out to Adolf Hitler himself!

-fervent calls to “show those GERMANS and JAPANESE the POWER OF AMERICA!”

  • When’s it coming out on Blu-ray? This is awesome.

  • Maddog

  • I’m not really sure what this odd fascination today with Reagan as the greatest president of all time. For the most part history hasn’t really regarded him all that special. Many polls of people and historians have him near the top but never #1. And to show that Im not that biased #1 is usually Lincoln.

    • Funkybat

Reagan is to the right what JFK is to the left. They are “heroes” to the people who share their ideology, while to opposite partisans they are “OK for a ______” or just downright bad. I think both of them have been somewhat overhyped in relation to what they actually achieved while in office. At least they let Ronnie finish his term instead of being snuffed out for not doing what someone or other wanted/ordered him to do. JFK probably would have been a greater President if he’d been allowed to finish the job.

  • They should’ve hired this guy:

At least make it nice to look at. The characters look creepy.

  • Randy Koger

    Holy shit!
    Are they serious???
I can’t say enough bad things about this racist, bigoted, one-sided, badly animated, VERY poorly voiced piece of crap.
Really….someone actually WORKED on this?? For real?
    Just kill me now.

(And BTW, I was there as an adult all through Regan’s reign and trust me, it was NOTHING like it’s getting put across in this “cartoon”. NOTHING.
Bad, bad times those were. As Rob Kohr said, not sure what everyone’s fascination with Reagan is. He did his part to completely mess up the economy – and other things – during his time.)

    • Chris Sobieniak

Like deregulating certain FCC laws that led us to where we are today.

  • Didier

I don’t know how to react… crying? laughing? Both in the same time?
    This is so… er… WOW!

If American kids learn stuff from that turd, the rest of the World is doom !

    • Funkybat

I’d say that if American kids base their knowledge off of this series, the rest of the world will be in great shape, having such a dramatic leg-up on Americans…

  • Les Moore

They are fascist cretins yet they did the impossible: they made “Fonz and the Happy Days Gang” look like high art using the same series concept. No one has come forward to claim responsibility? Was this cartoon an entry in Bin Laden’s planning book?

    • childisfatheroftheman

So that’s what bin Laden did with the money Reagan was funneling to him in the 80s . . funding low-budget misinformation!

  • Christopher Smigliano

I hope John Stewart gets a hold of this…I;m not exactly a big fan of the Democrats, but my god, the Republicans take the cake in smug superiority…

  • The Gee

Admittedly, I saw this on the TPM site before I saw it here. Glad I didn’t suggest it.
Also, I can’t bring myself to watch it. That poster frame looks horrible and I can only imagine how it moves.

This may be a good example of the message being more important the medium. I have seen similar, less-than-steller attempts at educational cartoons. This one sounds like all the cylinders are blown.
Oh well. We should all thank Hyuck-Hyuck-abee for his great aesthetic judgement, I guess.

  • Bud

they forgot to mention reagun selling arms to terrorists, lying about it, and using the funds to pay for an illegal secret terrorist war in Central America.

The “animation” is terrible, and huckabee doesn’t have a chance. Revisionist history doesn’t suit anyone well.

    • Funkybat

“American Dad” managed to cover that very well in a “Schoolhouse Rock”-style parody. The great part was that the allegedly conservative main character was the one telling the tale, trying to spin it as positive.

  • Jessica Britton
    • Funkybat

And here I thought “indoctrination at gunpoint” was supposed to be what Republicans claimed “liberals” want to do to everyone! How “liberal” of Huckabee!

  • David Breneman

As bad as this sucks, living through the 70s sucked worse.

    • Jason

      Haha no it didn’t.

  • mitten

Reagan was a great president in the same fictional world where they have time machines…

But really, this is what kids have to look forward to in a Republican utopia…outsourced “animation” depicting revisionist history…bring on the loops of people getting hit in the groin with objects, and fart sounds!

  • SJ

Does anyone remember which cartoon of the 90’s had Reagan as the president? (not SNL) Can’t recall much about it, except that it was funny. Not this funny though.

  • Kitschensyngk

There was another video in that article, “The Origins of WWII.” I lost it when the token black female pointed at a Rosie the Riveter poster and shouted, “You go girl!”

Could you tell this was written by a white guy?

    • cst

I saw that WWII one- it ends with one of the characters saying (And I SWEAR I’m not making this up) “This may not be the way you see it in the history books, but we know it’s true”.
Yeah, that’s some good educatin’ right there.

      • Chris Sobieniak

If that’s so, I wonder if they’ll stick in the bit about the Catholic Church pestering the Japanese government to bomb Pearl Harbor? (not that it matters but it might make for unusual writing challenges)

      • Funkybat

Wow, I thought I was up on my conspiracy theories, but this is the first I’ve ever heard of the Church goading Japan to bomb Pearl Harbor? Was Hirohito a big fan of the Papacy or something? Sounds rather odd…

      • Chris Sobieniak

I really don’t know. It was something my late mother had said of someone in her side of the family that was in with the church at the time who took it to his grave that rumor. I’ll be taking that to my grave, but since I bothered to blurt it out, I know the internet’s going to be doing the rest for me anyway in spreading yet-more idiotic lies as facts the way things are headed.

  • Dr. Ivo Robotnik

    • Funkybat

God, I shouldn’t have clicked on that link…horrific.

  • Peter Wassink

Look at that! light emitting oral cavities.
Apperently in 2011 its still pretty tricky to turn those off, but then i wouldn’t know i’m not a 3D guy.

It never seases to amaze me how full american politics is with those secondhand car salesman types like Huckabee.
His endorsement video (linked above by Brody: 05/12/11 3:40pm) for this crap is even more disturbing brrr…

  • I thought it was a joke…
    but it wasn’t!

  • TheBandSnapsBack

This looks like someone made a video with Xtranormal, then drew over each frame, badly, in MSPaint.

  • Alissa

…Where the 1970’s really that badly drawn? Makes me glad I was born in the 90’s.

The worst part is how nearly every humanoid has the same facial structure except for Reagan-bot. That lumpy attempt at a likeness will haunt my nightmares.

  • Scott B.

Awesome! Now let’s see Huckabee’s videos about the Three-Fifths Compromise, Dred Scott, The Trail of Tears, Bloody Kansas, The Indian Wars, the Women’s Suffrage Movement, the Philippine Insurrection, Jim Crow, Vietnam and Watergate! Those will be awesome too!

Oh wait. Those didn’t happen … or did they?

    • Funkybat

That’s asking way too much. I suspect he’s only vaguely aware of half of those events, and those that he *is* aware of, he knows only what he and other Republicans “know better” than all us book-learnin’ folk from those damn coasts….

      • Scott B.

Thanks, Funkybat. I’m an American, and I love my country, but it does irk me that a balanced view of our nation’s history, warts and all, is considered un-American by guys like Huckabee. To me there’s nothing less patriotic than blind patriotism. As a Christian, Huckabee should know that perfection (ever unattainable, yet always to be strived for) is a process.

  • pbrower2a

Yeah, sure — Ronald Reagan solved every problem that America had at the time and caused the fall of Communism through his then-stale bromides about Communism without giving credit to people in communist countries that rejected a materialist order in which conscience and personal choice meant nothing as well as the manifest failures of Communist ideology to meet anything more than the crudest of human needs…

The Reagan era is likely to become as irrelevant as the Roaring Twenties. I can think of many parts of history that have greater significance. The Civil Rights struggle, which called frequently upon God and stood for traditional values, deserves its own attention —

except that the animation is awful and the story-telling is contrived. Kids accustomed to animation by Disney (Walt and the corporation) and Miyazaki are going to find this effort awful. Children can pay attention to educational cartoons — but they had better be technically adept, entertaining, and of course neutral.

I can only imagine how much the War on Terror lionizes George W. Bush, someone who made liberals look nostalgically to Ronald Reagan!

  • Daniel J. Drazen

This thing, on the technical level, makes “Word Girl” look like Miyazaki. I hate to think the GOP in power would be just as cheap when it comes to running the country.

  • James

I’m a Reactionary. I love Reagan, as a president and as a man. And he deserves better than this. A lot better. I mean, jesus. From the revisionist spiel (for the record, textbooks are not inherently biased. They just aren’t.) to the awful, awful production values, this is insulting.

  • I laughed out loud at “Gimme yo money!”

  • Dave

Wait … they ripped-off Superbook’s “time traveling kids visit historical events” idea AND made the animation even worse than the crappy CG animation in the new Superbook ? Bleh …

I really thought this had to be an Onion-type parody . We’re sure this is real ?

    As someone posted above:

“This looks like someone made a video with Xtranormal, then drew over each frame, badly, in MSPaint.”

  • Gr3mlinify

Seriously, what….just what? Oh yeah, let’s protect children from the biased, one-dimensional, ridiculous soap-box rantings in our public schools by giving them our own version of biased, one-dimensional, ridiculous soap-box rantings….wait a minute…

    • Chris Sobieniak

What goes around, comes around they say!

      • Gr3mlinify

But the question is “do two wrongs make right?” especially in the case of children and teens who tend to resent adults preaching and manipulating them, no matter who the speaker is (anti-drug psa “boomerang effect” anyone?)

  • Dave

. . . is this man serious? You’ll see better animation on “Problem Solverz”! This CAN’T BE FOR REAL!!!

  • Not a day goes by where I don’t wish I could go see Cartoon Dump.

    I love cartoons.
    I love bad fiction/media.
    I love bad cartoons.

If only I lived near it…or if it came to DC.

  • The Gee

man, if anyone had a time machine, why would they go back to the 80s?

That is a horrible first step.

    • Chris Sobieniak

I wouldn’t mind going back there myself.

  • Daniel J. Drazen

Even Mick Huckabee must have conceived of this as a Culture War Hail Mary play, because he’s not going to run for president in 2012. Maybe he can devote his time to improving the quality of this piece o’ dreck.

    • Kitschensyngk

If this video series gives us any idea of his policy on education, then perhaps it’s for the better.

  • AWKWARD!!!!

  • Da5id

They took a time machine just to see 9/11.
