Looney Tunes liqour
by jerry
September 8, 2009 12:00 pm

I’m all for aiming cartoons towards adult audiences, but here’s one of the strangest Looney Tunes items ever licensed. Currently on ebay is set of Warner Bros. mini liquor bottles by Alpa Distillery, Italy dating from 1978. The set being offered includes Bugs Bunny, Honey Bunny, Wile E. Coyote, and Hippity Hopper. Hippity Hopper comes in the original box. Click on thumbnails below to see larger images.

Several years ago, Tim Cohea and Jon Cooke on the Termite Terrace Trading Post pointed out that there were at least seven others in the collection: Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Speedy Gonzales, Foghorn Leghorn, Petunia Pig and Granny.

Damn, these are ugly figurines. I could use a drink.

(Thanks, Joe Szczender)

Eric says:

I’ve known about these for years, I believe they were produced in Italy. They are so horrendous in their execution I simply haven’t had the heart to add them to my collection. Hippity looks like a monkey.

Autumn says:

Maybe that’s the point. You have to drink to make them look good. Especially that Honey one. Yeesh!

09/8/09  12:45pm

How bizarre! I’ve never seen figurines so ugly you needed to have on your beer goggles just to look at them!

lindsay heinzen says:

Perhaps they were only intended to be looked at AFTER you finish a few drinks in them. poor ugly glasses.

Chris Sobieniak says:

God, for a moment there I thought Hippity was E.T. :-)

Ed says:

I think that I’ll join you in that drink Jerry. Ick! Did they even look at a cartoon for reference or just make it up as they designed them?

Brandon says:

Honey Bunny looks like the Trix Rabbit in drag, and on drugs.

Bob says:

Don’t let bad art be an enabler to your alcoholism. Tisk tisk.

Dapper Jim says:

Ooooooh, Dont say they are ugly unless you want John K. all over you, lecturing about the SUPERIOR design of the 60s merchandise and the flaws that newer things have.

Seriously, dont. It happened to me once.

Bruce says:

Hal Geer must have been involved in picking out the liquor, at least.

09/8/09  6:44pm

No more for me thanks! I’m drivin!

09/8/09  7:10pm

Brandon, “Honey” IS the Trix Rabbit. This is precisely why they usually don’t let him eat any.

Dock Miles says:

Only Elmer and Foghorn were notorious alcoholics. So the rest is just slander by association.

Steve Gattuso says:

Not enough liquor in the world to make those things look at all good…

uncle wayne says:

It IZZ, however, a great joy to see (ANY) merch. on that adorable “Baby Kangaroo”!! There is none….at ALL. Ever!! Yes? No? I’ve been searching for decades!!

A.M.Bush says:

haha, those look like animal world soccer.

I’m also reminded of Mel Blanc’s performance in this classic Spike Jones skit…

Julius Gryphon says:

There is also a Sylvester and a Tweety in this set (I have the Sylvester still uncorked). I believe each character contains a different type of liqueur. At least a portion of this set was also produced in much larger versions as well…in case there wasn’t enough in the smaller bottles to make you forgot the bad character designs.

But seriously is anyone that surprised by bad character design in licensed looney tunes products from the 70’s? Stuffed characters in particular seemed based on a verbal description at best. Now, part of the charm is the ugliness of this sort of stuff. Back then, it was: what the @&#$! is this thing!

vince m says:

I’m guessing that whoever painted the black details on these hit the liquor pretty hard before they started. Some of the worst ceramics I’ve ever seen.

Joffe says:

Its a shame that they only had those four versions. Hippity Hops isn’t a terrible beer, but Tequi E. la Coyote and Bugs Brandy are barely drinkable. The true cartoon sommelier looks out for an Elmerlot Fudd, while connoisseurs of liquor will want to try Michigan J. Vodka, Speedy Gon-saké or Marvin’s Mars Gin.

However, D’absinthe Duck was just a poor idea all around.

I apologize for nothing.

Bugsmer says:

Joffe, luckily, people can now try out d’Absinthe Duck without being arrested.

mike r baker says:

Thank you, Matthew Hunter, for the Rabbit Seasoning reference. Made my day! And Joffe, I bow to you.

“Got lots of stamina.”

Eric says:

Uncle Wayne, there actually *IS* at least 1 piece of Hippity Hopper merchandise out there, a figure was released in Italy a number of years back. It was part of this collection…

As you’ll see, many other unusual characters were produced in this line too including Egghead, Pete Puma, The Dodo, Conrad and a bunch of others.

Eric says:

Dapper Jim, there *WAS* some nice cartoon merchandising going on in the 60’s but not for Looney Tunes characters. I have cool items from the 40’s and 50’s but by the time the 60’s hit, there was just zero quality control. Don’t even get me started on the garbage that was produced in the 70’s…oh…wait, these bottles are from the 70’s!!!
