This is the book I have been waiting for all year long. These cartoons were the greatest thing growing up in the 70’s when they enjoyed syndication and spawned many other cartoons by other companies. Jerry a job well done. Keep the dream alive.

To all who might be reading this— oh, this one’s a keeper.
As most of you will know, I haven’t traditionally been a Hanna-Barbera fan at all; but this book is so full of interesting mementos (yes, including Western Publishing comic book excerpts!) that it made the studio highly interesting to me.

Born in ‘53…I am, indeed, a quentessential Hanna-Barbarian! I, for one, can’t WAIT!!

While a young boy in the 60s I can easily say, Saturday mornings without Hanna-Barbera would have been intolerable.

I saw an advance copy of the book at WB the other day, and I’ve been raving about it ever since to anyone who’ll listen. It’s simply the best artbook ever published about television animation. I’ve got mine on order already.

I’ll go on record and state I am unabashedly a Hanna-Barbera fan. My favourite shows are their earlier hits of course, with those great Ed Benedict designs, but even some of the shows they did through the 70’s/early 80’s were fun too, if not quite as visually appealing. Hanna-Barbera defined the TV cartoon for me, and if it lacked the higher production values of its theatrical cousin, Hanna-Barbera still managed to come up with a limited style that was quite handsome when accepted on its own terms. I felt they were borrowing from the simple, more graphic approach introduced by UPA, and combining it with the traditional, slick, funny cartoon style of the mainstream theatrical shorts to come up with a look that seemed just perfect for the more constrained budgets and tighter schedules of TV.

Those early 60’s shows in particular were just pure joy for kids like me growing up in that era. With those dynamic Ed Benedict character designs, versatile voice talents like Daws Butler, Mel Blanc and Paul Frees, and jazzy theme music by Hoyt Curtin, these shows were a huge part of my childhood that ultimately helped shape the career path I chose to follow in my adult years as a cartoonist.

Yes, Jerry, I will be buying that book!

I’ve got a few ideas kickin’ round the ol’ noggin’ for a martial-arts fueled short next year, and I kinda wanted to style the characters in the quintessential classic HB style…gonna have to pick me up a copy. WOOT!

It just occured to me, Jerry…. but, are you BALDING? I’m sorry, couldn’t resist.

I might be the youngest Hanna Barbarian, but growing up in the 90s, Cartoon Network used to run the Boomerang block in the morning with a theme year. “Today is 1962 on…Boomerang!” I loved every minute of it, especially Augie Doggie and Space Ghost.

I am all about this! I only wish I could afford it right now, what with gas prices, heating the house, feeding the family, buying Christmas presents, etc. Any other time of year, fine maybe, but right now I’m spread too thin to pick this one up.

Pre-ordered it 3 months ago. Can’t wait to get it. I ended up buying a used copy of the old Hanna-Barbera hardcover book for what it went for new because it became so rare. I wanted to get on this one quick!

Congrats, Jerry! There are only a few names in the cartoon world that I look for on books and DVDs as a sign of quality, and you’re at the top. Can’t wait to get it.

Quick question though: are there two different print versions as the one you seem to be holding in the photo has different cover art from the one I pre-ordered on Amazon? Maybe that’s underneath the dust jacket? Or it was since revised by the publisher because the original design wasn’t ugly enough?

Anyways, I’ve waited all summer for this and it certainly won’t stop me from enjoying it!

That book looks very cool. And what childhood wasn’t affected by some old Hanna Barbera show? I loved their adventure shows. Space Ghost, Jonny Quest, Birdman, Dino Boy, Mightor.

And while we’re on the subject of Hanna Barbera I need some help with something. On Boomerang in between the shows they’ll play updated versions of older cartoons. There’s a Pixie, Dixie and Mr. Jinx one. Mr. Jinx has to wear a restraining order otherwise the cops beat him up. At the very end he chases the meeses and says something. What does he say? It’s been driving me crazy for at least two years now. Any help with this would be great.

I hope there’s something in this book on Teenage Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm and the Flintstone Comedy Hour from 1971 and 1972 respectively. The Michael Mallory HB book completely ignored P & BB as teenagers for some strange reason.

Late commenting, since my Amazon pre-order just arrived.

I just got the book and it’s wonderful with one exception. The text on page 12 & 13 repeats again on pages 16 & 17. The graphics on both sets of pages are different so it’s not the matter of just a printing error. Then clearly there is a huge gap in text content from the end of that page and what starts on page 18.

Does this affect the whole print run or just the unlucky subset I got?

For now could you post the text that is missing?

Other than that it looks wonderful.

This book is simply stunning. I hesitated ordering it based on the cover design, but then had a chance to see the book itself at Barnes & Noble. I ordered my copy from Amazon the same day!

It may rely a little more on tie-ins, toys, comics, and ephemera than on production art for some people’s taste, but the overall effect is a nostalgic visual feast.

Well I finally got it and it’s spectacular! I too have the production problem or whatever (thanks for posting the pages) but I wouldn’t trade the thing for the world. It’s loads fun. And I am sure there is enough for a Vol. 2? Please? Thanks so much Jerry, and the team that put it together. It’s plain to see a lot of love went into it, because you can feel it when you open the book up.

Just picked up the book from Pages over the weekend. Jeez, Jerry, what DIDN’T you cram into this book? Love the mini reproduction comics and the “Ruff and Reddy” cell. Grooviest animation book I own.

I Love Hanna Barbera, I want to know if in this book it are any mentions The New Adventures of Huck Finn. In 1968, Hanna-Barbera borrowed the famous Mark Twain characters, plucked them from the Mississippi River, and thrust them into various make-believe fantasy worlds in this live-action/animated series. Thanks.
