Ramayana by Sanjay Patel

Sanjay Patel’s Ramayana: Divine Loophole is a retelling of the classic Hindu myth with the addition of cheerfully stylized cartoon graphics that reflect the colorful spirit of Indian culture. The graphics are so overwhelming that reading it almost seems secondary; I’ve looked at the book plenty in the past few weeks but haven’t read past the intro yet.

Sanjay, who works at Pixar by day, has previously dabbled with Hindu culture in The Little Book of Hindu Deities. There’s another animation connection too: he was inspired to illustrate the story after watching Nina Paley’s Sita Sings the Blues, which is also based on the tale. The book, published by my pals at Chronicle Books, is available for just under $20 at Amazon.com.

I’m glad to see this-I blogged about it just yesterday. I’d missed Michael Sporn’s post and had had no idea it was out. Mine’s already ordered-it’s really a must-have.

As someone raised on these stories and characters, I am utterly floored by Sanjay’s vision for the Ramayana. Stunning and rich. A fitting tribute to this epic story.

My two loves: Hindu mythology and beautiful stylized illustration, together <3
I looked at the cover of the “Ramayana” book and had to stifle at gasp, it was just so beautiful and powerful at the same time.
“Ramayana: Divine Loophole” and “The Little Book of Hindu Deities” are going on my birthday/Christmas wishlist!

One of the most inspired, heartfelt, meticulous and jaw drop gorgeous illustrated books I have seen in my generation of book illustrators. Congratulations, Sanjay, on a stunning work of pure majesty. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves magic on a page–page after page.

This looks wonderful! I’m usually disappointed every time I see another interpretation of the Ramayana (in India it’s typical to keep remaking mythology).

But that is not the case here.

This book looks utterly divine! Good on ya, Sanjay!

The book is STUNNING! Aside from the expected gorgeous and delicious artwork, I fell in love with Sanjay’s unique storytelling style. His take on the Ramayana felt ancient & modern, funny, romantic and most importantly personal…. And yeah, the art is glorious too. Viva Sanjay!!!

Stunning.

I would love to see/do something similar with african stories and myth.
