Two Books You Must Have in October

Come October, I know I’ll definitely be adding two new books to my bookshelf:

South of the Border with Disney

South of the Border with Disney: Walt Disney and the Good Neighbor Program 1941-1948 by J.B. Kaufman. The topic is fascinating, the historian is impeccably qualified. This should be incredible!

The Duchess of Whimsy

The Duchess of Whimsy is the first time that Ice Age designer and New Yorker cover artist Peter de Sève has created original illustrations for a children’s book. I’ve seen it and can say that this isn’t your average children’s book. Every page is a work of art.

	Can you tell us more? The Disney book’s title is certainly interesting but, being unfamiliar with the ‘good neighbor program’, I have no idea what it’s about and the amazon link doesn’t seem to tell me either.

	I just added the first book to my Amazon wish list, and Amazon suggested Mickey Mouse, Hitler, And Nazi Germany: How Disney’s Characters Conquered The Third Reich , which has, um, quite a striking cover.

	It should be mentioned that this is not actually the first time that de Seve has illustrated a children’s book. You must have overlooked “Finn McCoul”. And while not children’s books, he also did outstanding work for “The Bear Went Over the Mountain”, as well as Mark Twain’s “A Murder, a Mystery and a Marriage”.

	Tim Hodge: I wrote it’s the first time that he has “created original illustrations for a children’s book.” The artwork for Finn McCoul was created for a storybook video and later adapted to book form. De Seve considers this his first children’s book too because each spread was actually designed for print rather than repurposing artwork from an existing video project, as was the case with Finn. Bitter Animator: The most well-known results of Disney’s involvement with the “good neighbor” policy are Saludos Amigos and Three Caballeros. There’s much more to the story but I expect those films will be an important part of this book.

	Thanks, Amid. I may have to check it out. The Three Caballeros was one of those films I loved simply because it was one of the first animated films I saw. Possibly just nostalgia, I don’t know. I haven’t seen it since.

	hopefully this book sheds more light on the alleged psychoactive substance use whilst south of the border. it certainly shines through in the films.. but what’s the real scoop?

	The Disney book looks really interesting! Hope there are alot of pics of the artists down there in South American sketching away. Gues I will keep my eye on Amazon and see when it’s ready.

	Amazon lists the Disney Book as reading level Ages 9-12 And at a List Price of $30.00, I might be better off calling my father and asking about a weekly allowance.
