Craigslist Animation Ad of the Week
by amid
May 28, 2009 3:33 pm

In this economy, any work is better than none, but as I pointed out last week, there are some offers you may want to think twice about. Here’s a good one that popped up on Craigslist:

Animator needed for tv pilot episode!

Seeking Animator to create 15 second animation to illustrate a point for a personal development TV pilot episode. Pay is low, however if show is picked up there is chance for future work, and credits off course…

I am an awesome person to work with, young/ hip /entrepreneur!

Pay: $250
Send email with links or samples of work.
Thanks! Email borchevitz@gmail.com
Exposure and joy guaranteed.

I did a little research on the email address, and it turns out the person commissioning this is a masseuse, which gives potentially new meaning to her guarantee of exposure and joy.

(Thanks, Patrick Tuorto)

Heh heh!

But yeah, definitely freelancer beware on this one. . .

Mercury Ghoest says:

Sorry dude but you’re wrong here, this looks like a decent job for a college kid. $250 for 15 seconds of flash animation? Hell if I was still in college and didn’t have a job then I’d jump all over this. Although she doesn’t explicitly say it here, I don’t think she’s looking for an experienced animator.
I’ve seen worse ads out there. At least this chick wants to pay

05/28/09  4:06pm

At least this one is actually offering money.

Chris B says:

yeah at least she pays! most of the other bums are asking you to work for a chance at future pay. 250 bucks not bad if you can crank it out fast. if you Google her email youll find out her career trade .Hey maybe a trade for a good ole fashion massage would work out ;)

Graham says:

I agree. At least there’s pay involved. If I had a dollar for all the ads out there that don’t offer money but great opportunity….well….I guess I’d be getting paid then!

Mike Milo says:

Hey for $250 bucks you can buy a
12 pack of beer
Carl’s Jr. dinner
a dime bag
munchies
and a cab ride for your stoned girlfriend/boyfriend.
and that’s only $100 which means you can do it two and a half times!
That’s a damn fine three day deal in my book!

Eddie says:

she should have included a ‘happy ending’ as all good massages… i mean TV ‘pilots’ include.

Stay classy.

Enoch Allen says:

I agree that she wants to pay, but I’m a little skeptic–skeptical–about the exposure.

Be nice if someone whose opinion matters to the big media higher-ups would be exposed to the work!

In L.A., $250 would last you about as long as it probably took Ms. Masseuse there to write the Craigslist listing. . .in Houston, you could stretch it from May-to-December. . .

Sammy says:

Oh my god, you people are so hilarious. I couldn’t stop laughing reading this post and the comments. Thanks for the funs!

05/28/09  6:53pm

Well, we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. After all, didn’t Diablo Cody use to work as a stripper at one point?

05/28/09  8:15pm

I knew there would be a rub…

Amid, your fervent outrage is impressive both in its frequency AND its visibility.

Amid, will you please make a weekly/regular ‘Craigslist ad’ post highlighting the bad and ugly offers on that site? These always make my day…

This poor woman probably got 50 emails yesterday from angry animation nerds.

I’m with most comments on here.. Great gig for a college newbie.

Only a 15-second animation? Sounds a bit premature to me.

Justin says:

Oh my god, A MASSEUSE wants an animation for decent pay? What could she possibly be plotting?

MY Dad is a Navy Chief and needs some graphics made for his website where he’ll sell wedding supplies when he retires. You think they might be conspiring?

timmyelliot says:

I’m sorry, but many of you are acting like snobs.

She’s offering money for an animation job. It looks like she was straight-forward. Even knowing she’s a masseuse, I don’t see any exorbent promises in her ad. She doesn’t look like a seedy company trying to sucker animators. So what if she’s a masseuse?

I understand picking on companies who should know better — but I think picking on her ad is just mean-spirited.

05/29/09  2:08pm
Emily says:

Some people here make a very good point. She is paying for what she asks. Any animator who goes for this knows what he or she is getting for the work. If you don’t think it’s enough money, then don’t respond to the ad. Simple as that.

timmyelliot’s right, we are being snobs…

yvette kaplan says:

Personally, I hope she gets some awesome animation AND a show out of this! : )

Dick: Dickster or Ricardo if you're not into the whole brevity thing says:

Glad you are pointing these iffy propositions out. However, it might be even more helpful if you applied a bit o’ context. Like, how much do you think Mrs. Masseusereena should charge? Don’t know either I bet. Nobody knows what, exactly, she wants for her chicken scratch. 250$ might be just right. Hell I can whip up somethin’ for 250$. Some one should call her and ask. You know, before we get our panties in a knot and need a masseuse to work ‘em out of our crack.

MA says:

You all make good observations, and someone offering to pay sounds better than working “for free.” It’s been my experience, however, clients with tiny budgets are hard to please. And who’s to say how long it would take to deliver something she was willing to pay for. If I was an artist looking for work, I spend time marketing my talents everywhere rather than use up energy working for low/no pay in hopes of a big pay-out someday.

I like the fact that the credits will be “off course”. Will they be printed upside down?
