A Cartoon Color Wheel

Artists use a color wheel for inspiration; to help select colors and mix pigments. Last month, a group of writers at created this clever cartoon color wheel, which is both useful and a lot of fun. Check out the larger version at Slate where you can select each character and enlarge each image.

  • Stephen M. Levinson

    That’s pretty clever!

  • Jay Sabicer

    I should’ve thought of that. I’m Gazoo/Morbo with envy!

  • 2011 Adult

  • Valentin Moretto

I take it the authors had no idea where to put Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck?

  • What? No Blue Meanies?

    • Haha Blue Meanie Blueness and Freakazoid should appear together there

  • Brilliant!

I suspect this was created in the early 2000’s. Nemo, being from 2003, is about the most recent property shown and there is a clear lack of modern favorites such as “Phineas and Ferb” or “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”.

The artist clearly has a preference for Looney Tunes and the teenage variant, Tiny Toon Adventures. (That’s okay, I share that preference for both properties.)

Speaking of TTA … It would be great if some network, like The Hub, started showing the popular Warner Bros properties (TTA, Animanicas, Freakazoid, etc) of the early 1990’s. After 20 years, its time to introduce the new generation to the cartoons that warped the previous generation. *ha*

    • Bozo

Oh no ! It lacks my Little Pony, that’s such a disaster !

  • Interesting that there’s no Disney…

    • Yeah, I was looking for Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy. But they do feature the Genie, and Pooh & Tigger.

      • Tim Hodge

        And Eeyore.

  • Cool. There’s Goliath, Pooh, Stimpy, Bonkers, Genie, Daffy, etc.

I wish they included Gizmo [Superbook], Darkwing Duck, Laucnhpad McQuack, Pinky and the Brain, Animaniacs, etc.

  • Hahaha can’t believe Beast is there, fantastic! XD And for some funny coincidence Zoidberg and Patrick are together X)

  • Michael F.

I like how they included characters from Doug in there; I have always wondered why so many characters have unnatural skin tones.

  • PJW

    Wow…they need to supersize that!

  • whippersnapper

    Yay! Beast Boy!

  • I spy Pikachu and Mewtwo, someone’s a first generation Pokemon fan. :)

  • Two characters from Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, yet none from Rocko’s Modern Life or Angry Beavers. There’s something unsettling about that.

  • Bozo

You know, it’s a selection of characters. I don’t think it’s supposed to be comprehensive ! So no Captain Planet, no Rainbow Brite and no Bucky & Pepito. It’s hard but that’s life. You gotta face it !

  • Daniel J. Drazen

No Ponies, but there are like four Care Bears, which makes sense when you’re doing a color wheel. And putting Apu next to Pooh … that’s sheer poetry!

  • Kendal

This is awesome they actually have Larry and Bob from Veggietales! That’s a claim to fame for Bigidea! LOL

  • Justin

I love this! They included Fifi from “Tiny Toons,” one of my favorite characters!
