Get Plastered with Plympton and Lasseter

Plympton Wine Bottle

When I think of the alcohol of choice for animators, I typically don’t think wine, but a number of animation artists are becoming involved in the wine industry. We start with indie filmmaker Bill Plympton who recently designed the labels (above) for PS1909 produced by the Dhaliwal Vineyards in California.

Lasseter Winery

That’s nothing compared to Pixar’s John Lasseter who is starting up his own Sonoma Valley winery called Lasseter Family Winery . A newspaper article from last December discusses some of the ideas for the 38-acre property. Of particular interest to animation fans, the winery will also be the home of Ollie Johnston’s locomotive and Ward Kimball’s train depot. In other words, it’s going to be a pretty damn awesome winery.

Darn… for a second there I thought there would be a project where Bill Plymton and John Lasseter would’ve collaborated.

But this is nice! I’ll try some Lasseter wine when I reach drinking age!

Hopefully it will be as good as Francis Ford Coppola’s wine.

Yeah, can’t really get excited about this.
Especially after all the layoffs at Disney.

Thanks for the post, bartender, I mean Amid. Nice label design, Bill.

I don’t buy it. The Winery is just a cover for the secret ‘Pixarland’ project, I just know it! ;-)

It’s really that Ward’s Grizzly Flats station (which began life as a Disney live action movie prop) and Ollie’s beloved train will have a decent place to be. If the wine is a success, that will be a bonus.

Jack Black says:

When I finish a Dreamworks movie, I’m sick of Jeffrey’s ‘WHINE’… So I take my paycheck and buy some of John’s ‘WINE’ ! Get it! HAAA-AAAAA! I’m a professional satirist speaking truths you mortals are afraid to express!

I thought that the “secret Pixarland project” was what they’re turning California Adventure into.

;P

Well, judging by what the real Jack Black said at the Oscars, that sounds like something he might say.

Lasseter Wines…the perfect way to end your mandatory 45 hour week.

I just hope John doesn’t get behind the valves of his train after downing a bottle or two. Driving (even a train) while drinking is just a bad idea.

Once the train and the station are on the property, I’m soooo there. Round out the trip to the Peanuts museum in Santa Rosa, and make a weekend out of it. Cartoon geek heaven among the vines…

So what would you say is alcohol for animators? I imagine you couldn’t ever get completely slanted like Van Gogh and down Absinthe when you’re having to work on a team, and wine is already out.

autisticanimator says:

Heh, makes sense…Lasseter’s known for offering wine for parents who accompany their children during “Trick-Or-Treat” on Halloween night….

As the ‘ol joke goes… The best way to make a little money in the wine business is to start out with a lot! ;p
Just kidding. My family has been in the wine business for generations and as an artist having grown up with that experience I must say there are a lot of parallels. To be successful in either you need to be patient and have good taste and with that in mind i’m sure the Lasseter’s will be great vintners. Personally, I can’t wait to try a bottle.

Kudos for getting an animator on the label, but…. errr, that label is ugly. Back to the light table, bill.

I’m with davidmaas. That label is fugly.

It does kinda look like a cracked globe with sludge running out of it.
