Daffy Tapioca

Cynthia Petrovic of Red Tango spotted this package (above) in a local supermarket:

Maybe I’m just getting more perverted in my old age, but I could not resist this packaging by Vons, who has it’s own “eating right” selection of foods, and they are now enlisting Warner Brothers characters to help hock the goods. What stopped me in my tracks was this insane pic of Daffy, coated gleefully in pudding, having a gay old time. What pudding has to do with eating well I don’t know, but the image of Daffy reveling in being splattered with goop on the front of a food product certainly made my day!

These products, exclusive to Safeway, Vons and Pavilions supermarkets, are part of an initiative announced several months ago by Warner Bros. to begin linking their characters to healthier food choices for kids. For more information on this, here’s an intereview (below) with Brad Globe, President of Warner’s Consumer Products, shot earlier this year at the Licensing Expo in New York.

I think perhaps Ms. Petrovic could have chosen her words more carefully. ^_^

And also, I think this is a smart move on Safeway’s part. Whether throwing in your lot with a regional brand is a smart move on WB’s part or not remains to be seen. Perhaps WB will partner with other supermarkets in other regions not covered by Safeway?

Finally, I think that maybe looking at what Spumco is doing with Pontiac might be interesting for both parties. Imagine “Looney Theatre, sponsored by Safeway!” They can just put the classic shorts out for starters, but perhaps new bumpers could be done for them, ala the classic ’60s era Bugs Bunny Show, in Flash. They could create a “destination website” where kids of all ages could see the Classic WB shorts, with the price of admission being marketing eyeballs.

Well Jerry you’ll be happy to know you’re not alone in your initial reaction to that image. Made my day too!

WB could also save a dollar and repurpose that Daffy illustration to move Immodium.

The illustrations of these characters are amazing. The shelf talkers and the floor decals (not in all markets) are especially lovely. Best these little guys have looked in twenty years or more.

Oh man! I learned something new-”bukkake”. Thanks Steve and Beckee-you sickos! But, that image does look like a big, messy bukkake bath alright. Didn’t they see the bukkakeness of the image before it was approved? I love it. That’s a collectible right there.

Ever since “Back in Action,” the merchandising designs of Bugs and pals have this very nice, Bob Clampett-esque look to them, and this is a perfect example of this. There are some very nice Hallmark cards, and some other merchandise with this retro, sort of “three-dimensional” (or at least with depth) character design on them. I like it a lot.
