Kristen Morgan, an artist and professor at Cal State Long Beach, has a current installation in Hollywood which combines pop culture itself (mainly cartoon character comics, board games, coloring books and merchandising artifacts) with sculpture, using found objects to create statues of animation icons Mighty Mouse and Popeye. The show, Objects for Everyone I Have Ever Known, runs through August 16th at Marc Selwyn Fine Art Gallery on Wilshire Blvd. The L.A. Times reviewed the show in today’s Calendar section.

    Go to its website thingy, have you seen that big yellow jug with a face underneath the table? Don’t suppose anyone knows what that is?

    Ryan- My guess was it´s Bert from Sesamestreet.
    This Yellowish jug under the table.

    Yeah, it looks vaguely like Bert, just noticed the little tuft of hair on top of it. Although I never thought Bert had so many teeth.

    "One of the most amazing things about these commercials was how much they achieved with a limited drawing count. When I put the first Marky Maypo spot in IRON GIANT I actually counted the number of drawings per minute and found it to be significantly lower than much of what is considered to be “limited” animation today… and yet it FEELS like much fuller animation. Because the animation is done with so much knowledge and experience, because the animator knew exactly what was essential and what wasn’t… you are left with an incredibly distinctive impression of these two characters… AND IT’S A DAMN INSTANT OATMEAL COMMERCIAL!"
