hermanhenry.jpgOver the weekend, Mike Kazaleh snapped this picture (above) of the window of a North Hollywood chicken resturant. Their mascot is an obvious swipe of Paramount Pictures beloved (and long-forgotten) 1940s cartoon star, Henry the Henpecked Rooster (at left, with co-star Herman the Mouse). Did they think we wouldn’t notice? I love how he’s dressed like a pimp and pointing towards the resturant’s “B” rating.

Meanwhile, last night, I was driving past the ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive in Burbank and snapped this pic, below (with my funky cell phone). After two years, we finally have signage - classy metal signage - on our headquarters building on Burbank Blvd. It looks great, and now you have no excuse not to find it. Next time you are in the area, please drop in.

Very observant… and nice snazzy sign!

Looks like the hedge is trimmed too! Leave your compasses, machetes and canteens home, and bring that extra sketchbook.

Animation Pimp says:

Forget Paramount, this is a serious slap in the face to Pimps everywhere. As spokesman for the Player’s Club, you can be sure that legal action will be forthcoming.

Hey now, not all of us who wear Zoot Suits are pimps.

Some of us are old school Lindy Hoppers.

I know enough about Board of Health ratings to know that a “B” isn’t something to be proud of.

Yay signage! Now all it needs is a logo to make it look complete.

Yeah! What Rich said…I knew it was a zoot suit too…he’s stylin but he isn’t a pimp.

If he were a pimp, though, wouldn’t the “B” stand for his stock and trade?

Keith Paynter says:

A beloved, yet long-forgotten cartoon star? That’s how they think they can get away with it. Obviously even Paramount doesn’t even know about it (well, maybe they do now…)

Reminiscent of the Popeye The Sewer Man post…

Trevor Grosbart says:

A B-rated greasy spoon rates a B level cartoon star/corporate pimp wannabe. Not everyone can be Ronald McDonald, but network development execs would proudly note that Henry is an aspirational character.

Daniel says:

Well, not to mention that if you look in the background they’re ripping off the Coca Cola lettering wholesale for their logo on the wall menu…

I doubt anyone would bother stopping them though

John says:

Since the restaurant has a B rating, that probably means at least one of the inspectors found Herman the Mouse, or one of his cousins, inside. I’d say put out a call for Katnip, but the place would probably be destroyed by the time everything was over…

THe ASIFA sign looks great during the day- shiny and gold!

I guess it’s an LA-thing I won’t understand since I don’t see a similar system in practice in my town. Most everywhere looks the same to me aside from what you’d get inside ‘em!

Pointing to the ‘B’ rating! Ha ha ha haaaa!

Thanks! That was unreal!

Rumor has it that the restaurant was later firebombed by an enraged hen—and the ex-pimp has resumed his earlier occupation of egg-sitting.

“Rumor has it that the restaurant was later firebombed by an enraged hen—and the ex-pimp has resumed his earlier occupation of egg-sitting.”

Christ, Gerstein, that would make a hilarious cartoon!

Congrats on the classy sign, AHAA!

David: Was an inverted doorknob in any way involved in this scenario?

I had the impression he was referring to the earlier Herman cartoons that Henry was in like “Scrappily Married” and “Sudden Fried Chicken”, but yeah, that would be amusing too.
