This brief animated promo marking Conan O’Brien’s move to TBS this fall is a lot of fun. It’s a clear nod to Terry Gilliam and other Seventies TV show openings. Incorporating more animation into the show would be a great way for Conan to distinguish himself from the crowded late-night field. Was this promo done in-house at TBS? Can somebody provide credits? UPDATE: In the comments, Amy writes that mOcean created the Conan spot above. Also, here is another animated promo for the show: 15 Comments » posted in Advertising, Conan O'Brien August 7, 2010 12:00 pm
This has already had over 2 million views on You Tube, but I couldn’t ignore it for the Brew. Inspired by Taijin Takeuchi, Olympus Corp. created this viral for the 50th anniversary of their Pen Camera. They shot 60.000 pictures, developed 9,600 prints and shot over 1,800 pictures again. No post production. Cool. (Thanks, Rich LaPierre) 13 Comments » posted in Advertising, Stop Motion, viral August 5, 2010 3:00 am
I had the pleasure to meet several Brew readers at my Dirty Duck screening, earlier this week in Hollywood. One of them, Jay Sabicer, gave me a reel of 16mm as a gift (note to others, 16mm film gifts always gratefully accepted!). On the reel was this curious animatic for an unproduced 60s-era commercial for Post Pink Panther Food (did this become Pink Panther Flakes?). Could this be the artwork of storyman John Dunn? Since we recently featured a Post Road Runner Cereal commercial, I felt it only right to upload this one as well. Bon Appetit! 14 Comments » posted in Advertising, pink panther July 28, 2010 4:28 am
Nathan Love created this uncommonly appealing NBC station ID in collaboration with NBC ArtWorks, the on-air graphics department of the network. The source of its concept is clear, so I’m glad to see that Nathan mentioned it on the YouTube page: “Inspired by the infamous Spumco promos, as well as vintage NBC logos.” Frankly, I still prefer Spumco/John K’s version, but then again, I’m a sucker for funny, skillful character animation. UPDATE: The animation studio Nathan Love commented about the production process on Motionographer: “It should be noted however, that this piece is entirely 3D, with the exception of the paint-stroke effect for motion blur, which was added in After Effects. We wanted to experiment with South-Park style animation, so in the end, every unique shape (expressions, head/body turns, etc), were all illustrated beforehand, and rigged in 3D.” There is also a behind-the-scenes video posted on Motionographer. Here’s a real Looney Tunes curio: A 1968 animatic for a Post Cereals commercial that was never produced – for a breakfast cereal that never was. (Thanks, Frank Panucci) 35 Comments » posted in Advertising, Classic June 28, 2010 5:00 pm
I’m posting this more because I like the message, not for its artistic merits. Not that it doesn’t have that too… Animator Chris Roth animated this spot for Lane Smith’s new book, a children’s story about a donkey and a monkey so engrossed with technology that they can’t quite grasp the concept of a “book.” Both the book and the spot deliver an important message to kids that sometimes its good to “unplug.” Roth animated, based on Smith’s illustrations, and also provided the voices for Z Animation. It’s A Book hits the stores on August 8th. 12 Comments » posted in Advertising, Books June 24, 2010 10:08 am
Lipton’s Brisk iced tea brand aired one of the most memorable animation ad campaigns of the Nineties which starred stop-motion versions of celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Elvis and James Brown, Bruce Lee and Babe Ruth. They’ve resurrected the campaign for the 21st century with an Internet viral film called “The Way of the Brisk” starring an animated version of mixed martial arts fighter Chuck Liddell. The stop-motion was directed by Brooklyn-based animator Tatia Rosenthal, who directed the indie feature $9.99. Tatia shared a few details about the production:

How sweet it is! Minneapolis-based MAKE created this animated signal film for the forthcoming Palm Springs International ShortFest: (Thanks, John Faso) |
