A series of Russian cartoon ads for some sort of crunchy snack called Xpyc Team have been posted on You Tube. The stick figure animation is really creative, and the minimalist sound effects are wacky and fun. The series is called “Versus”, and each one pits two fictional/nonfictional characters against each other. Russia’s Red Medusa studio made them. Below is Neo Vs. Skywalker. Among the many others are Beetlejuice Vs. Jack Skellington, Frankenstein Vs. D’Artagnon and King Leonidas Vs. Chuck Norris. (Thanks, Tushar) 10 Comments » posted in Advertising June 9, 2010 12:30 pm

Below is a 4 1/2 minute viral commercial for Taco Bell. It’s another parody of 1970s Saturday morning super-hero TV cartoons — the kind J.J. Sedelmaier has been doing to perfection for years — crossed with a Aqua Teen Hunger Force camp sensibility. Todd Durston and his creative crew at DraftFCB Chicago collaborated with legendary comic book artist Neal Adams to conceive this campaign. 12 Comments » posted in Advertising June 4, 2010 12:05 am
The Al Basama Al Beeiya (or United Arab Emirates Ecological Footprint) is an initiative aimed at inspiring people in UAE countries to reduce their individual footprint. This clever stop-motion promotional makes the point by using recycled paper figures and settings. Produced by the UK production company Asylum. Directors: Ben & Jos. Animation director: Jordan Wood. Get Him to the Greek is a live-action film that will be released in a few days. I don’t know anything about the film, but they’ve got this entertaining animated commercial to promote the film. Anybody know the credits for this spot? They deserve some recognition. And why doesn’t the movie studio have a nice version of this spot on-line? Rarely do I see animation this attractive in TV advertising nowadays. UPDATE: A hi-res and extended one-minute version of the spot has been posted to Facebook. It’s hard to make a bad commercial when you’ve got Guilherme Marcondes (Tyger) directing and Peter de Sève (Ice Age) designing the characters. Be sure to check out Peter’s blog where he posted a bunch of his character concepts. Watch the commercial on the Hornet website. CREDITS: 4 Comments » posted in Advertising, CGI May 28, 2010 12:05 am
Here’s one for the history buffs: a link to a fascinating online archive of fifty vintage Japanese animated commercials. This site is part of an on-line exhibition showcasing domestic life in Japan during the “Showa” period (the Hirohito era, 1926-89). Japan’s Research Institute for Digital Media and Content (DMC Institute) digitized of a large collection of TV advertisements obtained from the Momoya Co., a leading food company. The collection consists of 218 animated TV spots that date back to 1953. Of the 50 pieces posted on-line, the earliest one was produced in 1958. These provide a glimpse at a rarely discussed early phase of anime history. (Thanks, Carlo Guillot) 7 Comments » posted in Advertising, Anime May 22, 2010 5:00 pm
It’s Hulk Hogan vs. The Flintstones – for real. The “Hulkster” is suing Post Cereals, maker of Cocoa Pebbles, accusing the company of appropriating his image in an animated commercial for the cereal. According to Tampa Bay Online: In the “Cocoa Smashdown” commercial, a character goes by the name “Hulk Boulder,” which Hogan’s lawsuit says is a name he used early in his career until wrestling promoter Vince McMahon decided he should have an Irish name. The wrestler also contends he has been harmed by, among other things, “the unauthorized and degrading depictions in the Cocoa Smashdown advertisements.” Perhaps Hogan was offended by the shot where the character seemingly pulls a bowl of Cocoa Pebbles out of his trunks? You be the judge: (Thanks, Jeaux Janovsky) |
