I’m not sure how effectively Plug, the New World promotes Nissan’s electric vehicles, which is the soft sell purpose of the commissioned film, but it’s an undeniably creative and well made effort. The director of the short is Tsuneo Goda, who is best known as the creator of Domo, the poop-inspired mascot of Japanese broadcaster NHK-TV. There are lots of behind-the-scenes photos and making-of details on the website of Goda’s production company Dwarf. (Thanks, David OReilly) 8 Comments » posted in Advertising, CGI, Shorts, Stop Motion, Domo, Dwarf, Japan, Nissan, Tsuneo Goda August 30, 2011 5:15 pm
Despite getting food poisoning the last time I ate at Chipotle, they remain among my favorite fast food joints (along with my other fave, In-N-Out). One of the reasons I like Chipotle is their emphasis on humanely raised animals. Whether raising meat can ever be as idyllic or beautiful as depicted in this new stop motion short called Back to the Start is open to debate, but it’s an undeniably attractive piece of advertising. It was directed by designed by London-based Johnny Kelly whose hand-made approach to the art form is a perfect match for Chipotle’s message. Like George Pal’s Puppetoons, Kelly knows how to animate stylized geometric forms with organic appeal. Behind-the-scenes production photos on Johnny Kelly’s Flickr account. John K. has several new pieces of animation coming up – bumpers for Adult Swim – that explore a more abstract style. I have no idea if these have aired yet, but John is posting clips and discussing them on his John K. Stuff blog.
Eddie Fitzgerald thinks this (below) is “one of the funniest walks in the history of TV animation“. He might be right.
UPDATE – Here’s one that did air: 102 Comments » posted in Advertising, TV, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, John Kricfalusi, Toonboom August 24, 2011 12:00 pm
This funny new Duck Brand tape spot recreates the light cycle scene from the original Tron using duct tape, and features internet “Tron Guy” (Jay Maynard). The concept was generated via crowdsourcing through Tongal. 11 Comments » posted in Advertising, Stop Motion, Duck Tape, Duct Tape, Tron August 21, 2011 5:51 am
Liberty Mutual has commissioned a handful of animated projects over the past few years as part of their long-term ad campaign The Responsibility Project. The shorts each contain thoughtful messages that explore the theme of “what it means to do the right thing.” The latest animated piece is Lighthouse, a solid three-minute effort directed by Stephan Wernik. He tells Cartoon Brew a little bit about putting together the film:

I’m not intentionally ragging on the Tintin movie. I love the character and the original stories, worship his creator Hergé, and admire filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson. And I really hope this movie is good. But this latest U.S. one-sheet poster (below) looks awful. What a big crowded mess of ugly images. I mean really, this is how you are selling the movie to U.S. audiences – a large percentage of them who have never heard of or seen these characters before?

London’s grey landscape has never looked so alluring as in Daniela Negrin Ochoa’s trailer for the upcoming London International Animation Festival. Ochoa is a recent grad of the National Film & Television School. She provided these notes about the trailer:
