I was prepared to see Spongebob, Snoopy and various animated stars in today’s telecast of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, but was stunned to see Popeye in this commercial from General Motors. It’s a classy spot from GM, thanking us – the American people – for the loan that got them out of a financial hole and allowed them to report a record breaking $1.2 billion dollar profit this past week. I’m pleased they spent some of that money to give thanks – and to license a clip from Max Fleischer’s Axe Me Another (1934). 41 Comments » posted in Advertising, Classic, General Motors, Spot November 8, 2010 4:00 pm
The animation in this Canadian commercial for the 2010 Subaru WRX STI was powered by the car itself. Kevin Adams produced the 760 frames of animation at Starz in Canada, Chris Tait directed. To see how they made it, check the behind-the-scenes production video here. (Thanks, Michelangelo Cicerone) 16 Comments » posted in Advertising, Subaru October 11, 2010 4:22 pm
Solid color and design work in this CG spot for Georgia Power created by Santa Monica-based Three Legged Legs. The extensive behind-the-scenes materials are a veritable crash course in how to produce a TV commercial. 5 Comments » posted in Advertising, CGI, Three Legged Legs October 1, 2010 3:10 am
This is a new one on me: Glen Keane animated a Burger ‘n Bones dog food commercial ca. 1983. Wow! The commercial was produced by Kurtz & Friends, and the jingle was recorded by Leon Redbone, who was well known for his rendition of the Mercer/Carmichael song “Lazy Bones”. Keane’s expressive and inventive animation steals the show. Can anybody think of any piece of commercial character animation today that’s as competently drawn or fun to watch as this? I sure as heck can’t. Some parts of the spot seem unnecessarily complicated—the moving camera at the beginning, the design of the dog—but perhaps those were intended to add some flash and glitz to what is essentially a simple, character-oriented piece of animation. (Kudos to Michael Ruocco for discovering this on YouTube) 54 Comments » posted in Advertising, Bob Kurtz, Glen Keane September 17, 2010 12:05 am
CG has been imitating stop-motion for years, but this spot from Buck, the bicoastal (NY & LA) design and animation studio, had me fooled. It perfectly captures the fun of clay-animation. Directed By: Buck 9 Comments » posted in Advertising, CGI, Buck September 4, 2010 12:05 pm
Not to be confused with Cat Shit One — Scoop Away Kitty Litter has been producing an animated series for their website. The Adventures of Clumpy and Crumbly: The Litterbox Clumps, directed by Eric Makila and Jamie Webster (as “Borthololmule Flores”) from Toronto’s Alchemy, is as cute as stop-mo cat litter can be. Here’s a sample: (Thanks, Jeff McAndrew) 10 Comments » posted in Advertising August 27, 2010 12:30 pm
Speaking of animator Paul Fierlinger (as we did yesterday), The Animal Shelter Project and the Humane Society have brought Fierlinger together with cartoonist Patrick McDonnell (Mutts) to create six public service spots based on the book Mutts Shelter Stories. According to producer Peter Barg, “McDonnell felt Paul’s ability to capture true-to-nature body language was the perfect complement to his famous Mutts characters”. Fierlinger’s feature My Dog Tulip, opens in NYC at Film Forum on September 1st and in LA at the Nuart on October 22nd. You can watch all six spots online at Z Animation. 8 Comments » posted in Advertising, My Dog Tulip, Paul Fierlinger August 24, 2010 8:08 am
Buck created this commercial for Nike’s World Basketball Festival. I’m not fond of the basketball players-wearing-corsets design style, but I like the way the forms break up into abstract shapes during scene transitions. The arbitrary wiggles also seem to owe a lot to a much older animated campaign by Nike. The main reason I’m posting this though is because I’ve been seeing posters for the campaign around New York and shaking my head at how epically unappealing the illustrations are; surprisingly, with the animated abstraction, those same designs look good in motion.
