Jim Henson’s “Wizard of Id” Pilot Uncovered

Who knew that Jim Henson created a TV pilot in 1969 based on Johnny Hart and Brant Parker’s Wizard of Id? Watch rare excerpts above and then read more background about the project on the superbly curated Henson Company blog.

The company is posting other rare historical materials on their YouTube account as well, such as this Aurora toilet paper ad from the mid-Sixties with a delightful pantomime hand by Frank Oz:

The Sunday Funnies

A monthly roundup of comic strips that made reference to animated cartoon characters. Click thumbnails below to read an enlarged version.

Please note: This posting of The Sunday Funnies will be the last for the time being on Cartoon Brew. I will now post comic strip/animation gags occasionally on Cartoon Brew’s FaceBook page. Perhaps an especially good one may end up back on Cartoon Brew’s main page on a single basis (this is what I did before I made it a regular feature). But the regular weekly and monthly compilations end here.

“The Sunday Comics” by Stan Freberg

I received several personal emails today from friends who wondered what happened to our weekly Sunday Funnies post. For the benefit of others who are also wondering, as announced in last week’s post, the feature now appears once-a-month, the first Sunday of each. The next one is on February 6th.

Till then, enjoy this Stan Freberg commercial promoting newspaper comic strips from, I believe, the 1980s.

“Underworld” by Kaz

I’ve been a long time fan of the alternative comic strips and illustration work of Kaz. I just discovered he’s been co-animating his strips on a new site by New Zealand animator Matt Campbell and animator Karl Wills (The ComicBook Factory). Check them out here.
