This is an incredible short. Happy Hour (Café allongé), produced by Paris based Kaw Animation, directed by Maxime Paccalet, is what hand drawn animation is all about, where it should go, what it should explore. And it’s a lot of fun. (Thanks, Dek Dekku) 28 Comments » posted in Shorts June 7, 2010 10:47 am
Whenever the short films of British animation legend Bob Godfrey have appeared on YouTube, they’ve been quickly removed. But now there’s good news. Bob has an official YouTube channel where he’s posting clean copies of his films including the hilariously dry and NSFW Henry 9 ’til 5 (1970), which is posted above. The other two films currently available are the classic Do It Yourself Cartoon Kit (1959) and Alf, Bill & Fred (1964). Also of note, Bob Godfrey’s grandchildren run his official website at BobGodfreyFilms.com. 7 Comments » posted in Classic, Shorts, Bob Godfrey June 4, 2010 4:30 pm

Here’s a 15 second clip from Teddy Newton’s Pixar short Day and Night which will be released with Toy Story 3 on June 18th. The short is essentially hand drawn, being Pixar’s second film to be animated in 2D animation (Your Friend the Rat was the first). The insides of the characters are CG. Man, this looks good. Fly versus couch potato. This cute little short was funded by Aardman Animation, part of a series to showcase it’s stable of directors. (Thanks, Al Young) 18 Comments » posted in Shorts May 21, 2010 1:30 pm
In the recently released PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360 video game Red Dead Redemption there appears this “silent movie” The Dangers of Doctors and Patent Medicines. In the game, it is seen projected on the wall of an old west theatre. Of course this kind of animation would not have existed until the 1910s – I’m not sure what time frame this western game takes place in, nor do we know who animated this fun little piece at Rockstar San Diego, but perhaps the animators will identify themselves in our comments section below. The recently unveiled 2012 London Olympic mascots, which are somehow supposed to evoke the spirit of the games, now have their very own animated short. Frankly, the cartoon isn’t as bad as it should be, but to understand why the Olympics chose to represent itself with hideously phallic blobs, listen to what this Olympic official has to say: “The one thing that came out of our research with children is they weren’t looking for a cuddly toy or something human, but for something rooted in a very good story.” If ever there was proof needed that focus-testing and researching cartoon characters is a fool’s errand, look no further. UPDATE: Received word that the director of the animated short was Mario Cavalli and the backgrounds are by Neil Campbell Ross. 54 Comments » posted in Shorts May 14, 2010 11:30 am
This is one of those “love it or hate it” experimental pieces. London based designer/director Andy Martin has just completed a new animated short called Dry Fish. Martin details his thought process on his blog: “Sometime you find yourself in a place that you just can’t explain and quite often it can be a little bit worrying. This animated short tells of one such occasion as our hero tries to express his feelings in the only way he can…via the medium of song.” |
