In 2005, a group of students at ESRA made a short film called Above Then Beyond. It has just surfaced on the internet and is worth a look. It sorta reminds me of another film… can’t think of the title. Can you? Read more about the controversy at You Thought We Wouldn’t Notice. I’m intrigued by the bold comment that artist Meghan Jean wrote on her Twitter account earlier today:
Granted, it’s the opinion of one person, but with Teddy at the helm, it sounds about right. As mentioned earlier, Day and Night will screen in front of Toy Story 3. 11 Comments » posted in Pixar, Shorts May 10, 2010 12:05 am
In 2007, you’ll recall Madame Tutli Putli’s disturbing and effective use of live action eyes composited onto the animated puppets. A few years earlier, British filmmaker Lizzie Oxby combined stop-motion animation, live action performance (placing a live action head on a stop-mo puppet) and digital effects for her film Extn. 21. The results are equally effective — a bit creepy, but totally intriguing. (Thanks, DeK) 4 Comments » posted in Shorts May 7, 2010 11:00 am
It seems as if the entire history of Russian animation is now on You Tube if you search deep enough. Here’s a good one and certainly worth a look if you’ve got a spare 22 minutes (it’s broken up in three parts). It’s called Shareholders (1963, directed by Roman Davydov) and it’s quite a scathing look at American capitalism. A real piece of cold-war propaganda: (Thanks, Mike Stanfill) 23 Comments » posted in Shorts May 6, 2010 2:41 pm
Walker is an arresting seventeen-second traffic safety spot created with a painterly feel by Danish artist Carl Krull. Also eye-catching from a graphic standpoint is Head #1 (below); the animation was broken up onto seven screens as an installation project. 1 Comment » posted in Animators, Shorts May 6, 2010 3:00 am
ADA SPORT (ADA standing for Animation Dance Association) is a web competition where animation teams create quick short films which compete against each other for an ADA “Championship Title”. Here’s one of the better entries, a nice bit of guerilla filmmaking by Christi Bertelsen. 6 Comments » posted in Shorts May 5, 2010 9:01 pm
It’s fun to see a talented filmmaker like Andreas Hykade (Ring of Fire, Runt) explore a different direction in his work. The cleverness of Love & Theft’s morphing animation loops grasped my attention, and as a bonus, the psychedelic imagery is filled with animation references, not only to cartoon characters but also to filmmakers (see if you can identify Bill Plympton and Ryan Larkin). A short celebrating 50 years of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, directed and animated by Bernard Derriman. (Thanks, Steve Plunkett) |
