Writer, director, designer and modeler Heiko van der Scherm took three years to produce his CG short film Descendants. Whoopi Goldberg lent her voice to the project, which has been playing film festivals and winning awards all over the world. 26 Comments » posted in CGI, Shorts March 4, 2010 12:28 am
That’s a clip from Joe Murray’s Frog in a Suit, a new short film that doubles as a pilot. Here’s the set-up:
Murray, who is the creator of Rocko’s Modern Life and Camp Lazlo, has a book (with a really long title) coming out later this year: Creating Animated Cartoons with Character: A Guide to Developing and Producing Your Own Series for TV, the Web, and Short Film. He also writes an online journal. (Thanks, David Essman) 16 Comments » posted in Shorts March 3, 2010 12:03 am
Call me immature, but the combination of drawings and voices makes me laugh. It’s animated by Rob Bohn, and voiced by Bohn and Nate Milton. Bohn and Milton, both recent graduates of SVA, are part of the Brooklyn-based collective Amigo Unit which has numerous other short animation experiments on Vimeo. 11 Comments » posted in Shorts, Nate Milton, The Amigo Unit March 1, 2010 12:30 pm
I like this clever little video on animation production from Cirkus Animation out of New Zealand. It’s obviously slanted towards their numerous, and clueless, clients and producers: (via Motionographer) 14 Comments » posted in Shorts March 1, 2010 4:19 am
I saw Yulia in Annecy last year, and now everybody can view it online at the filmmaker’s website AntoineArditti.com alongside a few of his other pieces. It’s a cute concept with an unexpected ending. According to Arditti, the film was first animated in CG, then printed onto paper and drawn with traditional tools. It was produced by Metronomic. 2 Comments » posted in Shorts February 25, 2010 3:01 pm
Nobody’s come forward to claim responsibility for this elaborate animated review of Avatar. I particularly like how they (I’m assuming more than one person made it) used the same performance capture animation technique as the film itself. Stats on YouTube show that the video is popular in New Zealand, but word on the street is that it’s not WETA. Hmmm . . . (Thanks, Kim Hazel) 39 Comments » posted in Shorts February 19, 2010 12:00 pm

Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, the filmmakers of Madame Tutli-Putli have finished a new 23-1/2 minute short based on the Maurice Sendak book Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More to Life. The adaptation, which combines live-action actors and puppets with animation and digital manipulation, will be included on the Where the Wild Things Are Blu-ray release next month. Its world premiere will take place on February 28 at the Montreal Children’s International Film Festival. Spike Jonze was among the producers on this National Film Board of Canada production; Meryl Streep and Forest Whitaker provide voices in the film. The stills on the NFB website look intriguing, and I’m definitely looking forward to it based on the strength of Lavis and Szczerbowski’s last effort. |
