I’m not the biggest fan of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, but I’ll admit this parody of a behind-the-scenes film may be the funniest thing I’ve seen from Radical Axis. This video was created for the DVD collection Aqua Teen Hunger Force 6. (Thanks, Todd Redner) 24 Comments » posted in TV, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Radical Axis December 2, 2010 3:33 am
Would you rather watch a creaky stop motion cartoon from nearly fifty years ago or a splashy computer animated cartoon from today? Audiences were faced with that decision on Tuesday night when CBS programmed the venerable Rankin/Bass special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer against DreamWorks’ Shrek the Halls and Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas on ABC. Rudolph soundly drubbed its competition with 11.3 million viewers and was the second highest-rated program on network TV during the entire night trailing only Fox’s Glee. Shrek the Halls meanwhile delivered 7.4 million viewers and Grinch 6.9 million viewers. Rudolph had a ratings gain from 2009, whereas both Shrek and Grinch had significant year-to-year rating declines. Everybody say it with me: audiences don’t watch animation for technique; it’s about how much they love your characters and story. No, it’s not the latest Nickelodeon Movie, but maybe it should be. It’s the third viral comedy video from “Dr. Coolsex” – a NYC sketch comedy trio consisting of Alex Charak (who plays Doug), Dustin Drury (playing Roger), and Greg Murtha (Chalky). This trailer was co-conceived with Alan Starzinski (Boomer), and that’s actress Janet Passanante playing Patti Mayonaise. 15 Comments » posted in TV, Doug, nickelodeon November 29, 2010 7:00 am
Australian model Sophie Lee had an acting career in TV and Motion Pictures, but began her on-screen career hosting a local afternoon Bugs Bunny show in 1990. This sexy promo was aimed at luring adult males to watch the cartoons – and it worked! (Thanks, Thad K) 27 Comments » posted in TV, Bugs Bunny, Sophie Lee November 28, 2010 1:05 am
Here’s a unique vintage promo for ABC’s Saturday morning programming that was aimed at adults. Shown in prime time during summer 1973, actor Michael Constantine (then of Room 222) extols the virtues of Yogi Bear – whom he says will now face off against such “real life” villians such as “Mr. Bigot” and “Mr. Smog” – and other pro-social animated series like Scholastic Rock (The less said about Goober and The Ghost Chasers the better). “Let’s face it – kids love to watch cartoons.” (Thanks, Mike Kazaleh) 44 Comments » posted in Classic, TV, saturday morning November 24, 2010 1:30 am
NBC’s Joe McHale/Chevy Chase sitcom Community is doing a holiday themed show in faux-Rankin-Bass style stop-motion. Here’s a 13-second preview snippet from the upcoming December 9th episode: 14 Comments » posted in Stop Motion, TV November 20, 2010 1:06 pm
Last night’s episode of Sym-Bionic Titan is causing a mini-uproar on the Internet because of this sequence: Many commenters, including the popular blog Super Punch, are questioning why Cartoon Network showed something so suggestive on a show that is rated TV-PG. Do you think this went too far for a TV-PG show that airs at 8pm? And while we’re at it, here’s another question: does nobody on the Sym-Bionic Titan crew understand how to draw a foreshortened pose? Not that there was much sexiness to begin with in this stiffly posed and animated sequence, but drawing a character so poorly so that she appears to have a leg tumor surely doesn’t help.
Pardon me while I revert to old fogey mode, but it’s sad that after decades of progress in this art form, today’s television artists can’t animate anything nearly as appealing or sexy as work created eighty years ago: 219 Comments » posted in TV, Poor draftsmanship, Sym-bionic Titan November 20, 2010 12:05 am
How’s this for a merchandising ploy? This came in today’s email:
I wonder how many people were on the fence about buying this DVD set, but changed their mind and immediately ordered it once they heard the fifth-billed actor on the series was going to sign the box? (Thanks, Bob Miller) |
