The photo above is one I snapped of the wall of the Warner Bros. booth at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas last week. The hype for the new Looney Tunes Show was there in full force, with Jessica Borutski’s character designs taking front and center in the promotion. Several Brew readers sent in the following scans (below), which were apparently given out to licensees. The more I see of these, the more I like.

New episodes of Futurama start airing on Comedy Central beginning in two weeks, on June 24th. But artist GottaBeCarl has started the fun a bit early with his Futurama X-Men Meld at DeviantArt. Collider.com has posted this image from the new CG Road Runner and Coyote shorts being produced for the new Looney Tunes Show coming to Cartoon Network. This new picture isn’t as exciting as the previously released image – but I believe the previous shot was from one of the upcoming theatricals and this new one is from the TV series. The talented Ralph Eggleston designed this year’s poster for the Telluride Film Festival. As far as I know, the only other animation artists who have ever designed the Telluride poster are John Canemaker and Chuck Jones. The festival’s sole requirement for poster artists, which have included Ed Ruscha, Jim Dine, Laurie Anderson, Julian Schnabel and Seymour Chwast, is to incorporate the word “Show” somewhere in the design. Eggleston said on the Telluride website, “I’ve always loved simple, graphic, attention grabbing imagery and that was the basis for my design…I was given complete creative license by the festival in this process and was further inspired by the famous hitch-hiking scene from It Happened One Night. This is an unabashed plug for one of my all-time favorite TV shows. Nickelodeon just released the complete Invader Zim on DVD in two volumes and they were kind enough to send me Season One to review. I always thought highly of this series, but watching it again this weekend reminded how good it truly was. And in light of the last ten years of subsequent shows on Nick, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network, it now plays like a TV animation masterpiece. I laugh long and hard at incidents, situations and visuals on this show, and if there is any justice it should be ranked alongside the likes of South Park and The Simpsons. I mean it. Invader Zim barely lasted two seasons and has been relegated to cult status among animation buffs and devotees of Jhonen Vazquez’s comic book work. The show was too dark and subversive for Nick’s core demographic — and much of the humor flew past the heads of their younger viewers — but in retrospect Vazquez and his director Steve Ressel did everything right. The episodes never play it safe, nor are predictable. It marches to its own drummer – and that’s as it should be. And I can’t let this review end without mentioning the contributions of two personal friends: Richard Horvitz, who is perfectly cast as the manic voice of Zim; and my Cartoon Dump partner, Frank Conniff, who served as Story Editor. Invader Zim was one of the last of the era of truly creator driven series and deserves to sit beside The Ren & Stimpy Show and Spongebob Squarepants as one of Nickelodeon’s best. These new DVDs sets are presented raw – no frills, no bonus materials – but deserve a place on your DVD shelf. I highly recommend it. Amazon link: click here. 68 Comments » posted in DVD, TV

As most of you know by now, last week’s episode of South Park was censored by Comedy Central over fears the show might stoke violent retribution by radical Muslims. Now it has inspired an artists’ movement — a national Everybody Draw Mohammed Day. Molly Norris, the cartoonist who started it, says she wants no part of the May 20 event, which is gaining momentum online. “I made a cartoon that went viral but [this campaign] isn’t really my thing,” cartoonist Molly Norris told Comic Riffs, characterizing her cartoon as merely a personal response to Comedy Central’s censorship of a “South Park” episode last week. “Other folks have taken it over” — an appropriation she says she is distancing herself from. Eight thousand people have already joined the Facebook page. Other media, including The Daily Show and The Simpsons (image above from Sunday night’s episode), have publicly supported South Park’s right to parody. It’ll be interesting to see where this all leads. |
