David OReilly debuted his latest film on-line this afternoon. The External World premiered last September at the Venice Film Festival and has been racking up awards ever since, notably a grand prize at the Ottawa International Film Festival and an honorary mention at Sundance last month. I’ll leave it at that for now, but a lengthier review of the film will be posted shortly. 58 Comments » posted in CGI, Shorts, David OReilly, Germany, Ireland February 8, 2011 11:00 am
Opening in France next May via Warner Bros., is this epic, Akira-like feature film, directed by video game veteran Antoine Charreyron (Tomb Raider VI). (Thanks Ed Austin, via Blastr) 29 Comments » posted in CGI, Feature Film, The Prodigies January 26, 2011 6:15 am
The People’s Republic of Animation recently produced these slick vinyl toy-styled launch trailers ahead of the release of de Blob 2, a videogame published by THQ. The Adelaide-based studio also produced some of the in-game cinematics. Second trailer and credits after the jump: 4 Comments » posted in CGI, Games, James Calvert, People's Republic of Animation January 25, 2011 12:35 pm
Check out this insane footage from the Tamil film Enthiran, which is the most expensive film ever made in India. Keep watching and the CG just gets nuttier and nuttier. In terms of graphic bravado and sheer ridiculousness, this puts American superhero films to shame—a true live-action cartoon. Tous des Monstres (All of the Monsters) is a student film from Supinfocom directed by Nicolas Deprez, Laurent Jaffier, Pierre Lippens and Gabrielle Lissot. It’s NSFW, but more than that, the imagery is just plain disturbing. The tight little story they constructed around the visuals, with Pinocchio-esque undertones, is impressive for a student CG short, and shows the value of focusing on story and character as well as technique and animation. 18 Comments » posted in CGI, Student, France, Gabrielle Lissot, Laurent Jaffier, Nicolas Deprez, Pierre Lippens, Supinfocom December 9, 2010 3:45 am
The Gruffalo, a holiday special based on a children’s book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, makes its US debut TONIGHT on ABC Family at 7pm/6c. The half-hour CG/stop motion mix was directed by Jakob Schuh and Max Lang at Germany’s Studio Soi and produced by London-based Magic Light Pictures. The film also debuts in Canada next Wednesday, December 15, at 6:30pm on TVO. The filmmakers are posting pieces of Gruffalo pre-production art on their blog every day during the month of December. I’ve yet to see the special, but have been hearing plenty of raves about it throughout the past year, and have watched it pick up award after award including Best TV Special at Annecy, Best European Program of the Year at Cartoons on the Bay, Best Short Film for Children at Anima Mundi, and Best Television Animation Made for Children at Ottawa. The film was also nominated for a BAFTA and is currently on this year’s Oscar shortlist for best animated short. If you’ve seen it already, share your thoughts in the comments. Trailer and hi-res still gallery follows the jump. 23 Comments » posted in CGI, Stop Motion, TV, Germany, Jakob Schuh, Max Lang, Studio Soi, The Gruffalo December 9, 2010 12:05 am
Disney Animation followed up its CG Prep & Landing TV special from last year with this new 7-minute short, which premiered on Tuesday night during the telecast of A Charlie Brown Christmas on ABC. In case you missed it (I did), they’ve graciously posted it onto YouTube. I loved the first one, and this is a worthy little follow up. Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton wrote and directed. And yeah, that’s Betty White as Mrs. Claus. (Thanks, Bruce Wright) 22 Comments » posted in CGI, Disney, Prep & Landing December 8, 2010 12:28 pm
Don’t worry, the marketing team is just messing with us. The actual film won’t be composed entirely of warmed over CG cliches that make audiences want to stay miles away from the nearest theater playing Rio. (Crosses fingers.) Higher res version on the Apple website. |
