The CGI Yogi
March 31, 2010 11:35 am

I wasn’t going to post about this. I was sent these images of CGI Yogi and Boo Boo a few days ago and decided they were so horrible that they couldn’t possibly be the finals. Now they seem to be all over the internet (you can see larger versions on The Movie Insider.com) and many readers have sent them in to me, wanting my opinion.

My opinion? As much as I hate the idea of this CGI Yogi Bear movie, I can’t believe these are the actual images of the characters that will be animated in the film. These designs are simply awful. What about you? What do you think?

Coulda saved a lot of money by simply using the costumes from Six Flags.

Tim Curtis says:
03/31/10  11:46am

I think these are snapshots from one of the Yogi Bear Jellystone Park campgrounds……

humming says:
03/31/10  11:53am

Hey, it COULD be worse! They could’ve gone completely naturalistic, like putting a hat and tie on a real bear! And these could just be early stills made for publicity- the models could change in minor areas.

But yeah, it still doesn’t match with the bgs, and it’s still a bad concept!

diego says:
03/31/10  11:57am

awful stuff Jerry, awful stuff,
they’re not going to learn, are they?

creepy says:
03/31/10  11:57am

the designs aren’t as terrible as the voice choice of JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE!!!

FP says:
03/31/10  11:58am

Except for the crappy hair, they look just like the cartoon characters. Yogi’s hair feels almost hand-painted, or processed with an “art” filter.

Hoax?

Bill Andres says:
03/31/10  12:00pm

“PUuuuuke!”

NC says:
03/31/10  12:01pm

I think the truth of the matter is Yogi Bear along with Alvin and the Chipmunks do not belong in our world. So to try to make them exist in a live action world is just asinine.

Tedzey says:
03/31/10  12:08pm

Ed Benedict is rolling in his grave… T_T

ParamountCartoons says:

Is it any worse than this?:

You decide.

Anyways, I can’t help but laugh at those images of Yogi and Boo-Boo.

Zach Smith says:
03/31/10  12:09pm

If there is a Jesus, he better come back soon before this gets out of hand.

Grayson Ponti says:
03/31/10  12:11pm

They need to stop making these horrific hand drawn remade in CGI crap. As much as I don’t like Hannah-Barbara limited animation this film will make that look state-of-the-art

JP says:
03/31/10  12:17pm

Maybe this will spark an interest in all things H-B for the masses.

I’d sure like to get a complete Huckleberry Hound DVD set someday!

Gobo says:
03/31/10  12:22pm

If I saw that Yogi walking towards me, I’d run screaming.

Mac says:
03/31/10  12:29pm

I saw these and thought it was part of a hoax, this was confirmed in my head when I read that Justin Timberlake is doing the voice of Boo-Boo. But now I learn that at least that second piece of information is true? Wha?

Paul N says:
03/31/10  12:35pm

Neither of them look good, but I think Boo-Boo’s closer to looking like the original than Yogi.

BJ Wanlund says:
03/31/10  12:42pm

Hey, these are way, way, way better than those godawful designs for Alvin, Simon, Theodore, and the Chipettes!! Plus, I was expecting them to be much, much worse than these designs are. That actually looks like something I might go see, really.

BJ

Deaniac says:
03/31/10  12:42pm

Honestly? It doesn’t look as bad as I thought it would.
It’s better than CGI Scooby Doo (2002), that’s for sure.

optimist says:
03/31/10  12:53pm

They just look like walkarounds to me. Just suits. Meh.

Russell says:
03/31/10  1:02pm

What’s wrong with the world?

Rooniman says:
03/31/10  1:03pm

Those designs are an apocalyse waiting to happen, and Justin Timberlake as Boo-Boo? WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?!?!?!?!

Sam says:
03/31/10  1:03pm

The thing that ruined these for me most is those Pixar eyes… Big oogly, overly detailed iris eyes. But aside from that, it might work if it’s done all with CG cartoon characters, no live action thing with this please.

Angry Anim says:
03/31/10  1:06pm

Hmmm…

But I didn’t think that they started animation yet…

Seems like a hoax.

dann Beeson says:

TR says:
03/31/10  1:14pm

I can almost guarantee you these are not final images. Yogi looks like a Look Dev test or something along those lines. I’m sure the artists slaving away on this are horrified to see these as the first look at what they are trying to produce with an incredibly tight schedule and low budget.

elle says:
03/31/10  1:25pm

Just look at Boo-Boo’s dead eyes … perhaps Rodney Alcala should do his voice instead?

matt says:
03/31/10  1:36pm

Well it’s April 1st where I am anyway…

Stephen Barron says:
03/31/10  1:46pm

Remember what Mr. Jalopy says…

“Everything you love, everything meaningful with depth and history, all passionate authentic experiences will be appropriated, mishandled, watered down, cheapened, repackaged, marketed and sold to the people you hate.”

…especially when you’re a grown man who still watches cartoons.

Which I am.

Scarabim says:
03/31/10  1:50pm

Heavens to Murgatroyd!!!! Exit lunch, stage left!

Scarabim says:
03/31/10  1:56pm

Okay, I’ve recovered a bit…

The thing is, Yogi’s original design did not resemble a real bear at all. AT ALL. He’s a very poor choice of Hanna-Barbera characters to render in CGI (although there are worse choices, as will be noted below). Scooby Doo looks a lot more like a real Great Dane than Yogi ever did a bear. Same with Garfield – he looked surprisingly like a real cat when processed in CGI. As a result, the uncanny valley never appeared in the Garfield and Scooby films. But Yogi? You might as well try to to a CGI version of Quick Draw McGraw and pass that off as convincing when he’s made to mix with real humans onscreen. We’re talking uncanny CANYON here.

And I thought Hollywood couldnt get any worst, this goes to show that they are officially screwed. And leaving people with REAL talent on making movies out of the industry. We already had one Yogi bear movie, We had one Jetsons movie, and we already have one Tom and Jerry movie. Out of all these…Tom and Jerry was the worst one to happen, it was like Disney animators who worked for Disney came to work on it without looking at the cartoons TAJ were based off of.

And if John K saw it he would probably say something like “This is what would happen if Tom and Jerry were created by Walt Disney”. Its bad enough Hanna-Barbara are spinning in their graves when Hollywood is ruining every classic character that they created. With people who dont even know how to do the series that they were based off…If Hollywood wants big bags of money, They need to bring back adult animation. And 2D animation for that matter…People like me are getting sick to death of movies like these.

Keith says:
03/31/10  2:22pm

Gotta be an April 1st gag… only it’d be too obvious to unveil ON April 1st. So instead it’ll just be revealed as a joke sometime tomorrow or the day after… they just want a lot of hooplah over it between now & then.

Hope they are awful enough for Warner to continue. Hanna-Barbera stuff

Christopher Cook says:
03/31/10  2:32pm

Why would a CGI Yogi Bear be greenlit anyway seeing as how the DVD set of the original TV series sold so poorly? SpongeBob is more recognized by audiences born 1990 and on than Yogi is. I’d love to know what they’re spiking the water with at W-B.

mantchoo says:
03/31/10  2:49pm

Scarabim, I don’t think you fully understand the meaning of “uncanny valley.”

Mr. Semaj says:
03/31/10  3:04pm

Hollywood hates us. :(

NC says:
03/31/10  3:09pm

I think Nick A might be on to something with this. We may have all been taken for a spin. Remember a few years ago when IGN “leaked” out a supposed trailer for Legend of Zelda just before April Fool’s Day and then on April 1st revealed it was a hoax?

Don’t be surprised if tomorrow we hear that this was some sort of prank. I mean there is no way on God’s green earth something THAT ugly will make it to the screen.

Execs maybe stupid but they aren’t blind.

Mr. Ranger isn’t gonna like this, Yogi…

I’m burning.

Joey Waggoner says:
03/31/10  3:51pm

Surprising BooBoo doesn’t look that bad, Yogi on the other hand looks like a zombie.

I don’t mind making the characters CG, but couldn’t they at least make them look Cartoony (movies like “Horton” and “Cloudy” proved that CGI can make cartoony looking characters).

Cameron A. says:
03/31/10  3:52pm

What kills this for me, aside from seeing Yogi Bear in mo-cap, is Dan Aykroyd as Yogi Bear. I can’t see how he can make his voice sound in any way like Daws Butler’s. I know he’d like to be an A-list draw again, but him doing a Ed Norton impersonation? No.

Anoniguy says:
03/31/10  4:02pm

Never has a post been more worthy of the ‘bad ideas’ tag.

Katie says:
03/31/10  4:04pm

Hey at least it CGI VFX work that’s being done in the US. For those VFX workers that are struggling to find jobs, working on something like this wouldn’t be unwelcome during a time where there isn’t much going on.

Chris powell says:
03/31/10  4:07pm

I never thought about it being a hoax. could very well be. we’ll find out tomorrow – for some reason – i think not though

i am honestly surprised. I expected a creapy real bear/cartoon bear hybrid with a pork pie hat on. These look like yogi and booboo. We have to hold judgement on how they fit in the world i guess until we see a trailer but I am sort of suprised.

i was thinking about how when they make these movies (alvin…garfield….scooby…..) they will often have the main characters GG and exageratted but the OTHER animals (ie the other cats in garfield..) will just be regular filmed animals. maybe they should make every bear in jellystone CG and talking, at least to give it some consistensy. i hope they dont do the same kind of gross out humor that they do in Alvin..(each others poop in mouths) that was shameful…

….i dunno, surprised and waiting……

oh and Zach smith, there is a Jesus….

Iain says:

Warhead says:
03/31/10  4:50pm

Ahhhhh, my eyes! It burns!

Seriously, it looks like Zemeckis finally got his hands on Yogi!

Fat Head says:
03/31/10  5:01pm

They look bad because they ARE very early production models, work in progress. You will know what they look like when they are advertised. So it is a bit premature to judge.

Kitschensyngk says:
03/31/10  5:09pm

Boo-boo looks like he wants to eat me.

Daniel Lee says:
03/31/10  5:13pm

truthfully i think they aren’t bad… the whole idea of making a CG Yogi and Boo Boo on the other hand… sigh… why must they do that? keep with the classics… don’t ruin them…

Roberto Severino says:
03/31/10  5:30pm

I’m still hoping that this is a joke. Hollywood screws up again. :(

purin says:
03/31/10  6:18pm

On the one hand they’re so bad they could only be pranks. On the other hand, they’re so bad they could only be real and the product of millions of dollars of investment.

They look like they were designed to be more simple, and then someone demanded “More fur! CG is supposed to be super realistic!”

… which would be a fair thing to suppose for either possibility.

Chris J. says:
03/31/10  6:34pm

As much crap as I give Cartoon Brew about being a bit elitist at times – boy, when you’re right, you’re right. That’s abhorrent. Awful, awful design.

Tekena says:
03/31/10  6:41pm

The best part is that it’s going to be made like Garfield and Alvin and the Chipmunks!

THEY’RE GOING TO USE REAL PEOPLE!!!

Chris Sobieniak says:
03/31/10  6:41pm

“Ed Benedict is rolling in his grave… T_T”

Certainly…. I still wish this was all a big prank anyway. The one thing that turns it off for me are those eyes. Those creepy, DEAD eyes that too many CGI movies have to emulate because nobody likes going with simple dotted pupils anymore. I’m not going to go further with the voice casting or even just the designs themselves, the eyes are too much!

Pedro Nakama says:
03/31/10  6:59pm

It looks really bad. Any word on which VFX company is doing the work?

Kid says:
03/31/10  7:20pm

Not crazy about the logo, either. Looks like a hunter mounted Yogi’s muzzle on the wall.

Nick says:

hey while we’re at it lets get Nicholas Cage to play Ranger Smith.

Craig Clark says:

I thought the idea was to get people INTO the theaters?

Andrew Kieswetter says:
03/31/10  9:26pm

Both Yogi & Boo-Boo look pretty terrible. Can’t they just do live-action/CG versions of Inch High Private Eye or The Cattanooga Cats instead?

Phil says:
03/31/10  9:28pm

Yogi is gonna give me nightmares.
Booboo on the other-hand, really isn’t as bad as I expected.

cm says:
04/1/10  7:17am

They look like cheap costumes.

But seriously, what was everybody expecting?

RobEB says:
04/1/10  7:21am

Yogi looks like a cigar store Indian that grew moldy. I think this must be a hoax. These shots look like scans from a faulty printer.

Kingfish says:
04/1/10  7:57am

This makes no sense to me- taking 2D characters designed in a very flat, graphical style and attempting to make them look “real”. What’s the point? Seriously, why make this movie? As a cartoon, maybe it could work (although Yogi has always worked best in short segments) but filming it in live action just forces you to compromise all the good qualities of the original. Make up your own bear character!

Dan Aykroyd as Yogi only makes sense insofar as they sort of look the same. And to give Boo-Boo the voice of a human man, who happens to be a huge pop star, is the most embarrassing display of corporate pandering to an irrelevant demographic I’ve seen in a while.

Makinita says:
04/1/10  7:59am

seriously this makes me want to PUKE !!!!
Thank u

Ben says:
04/1/10  8:03am

I’m actually surprised at how closely they stuck with the original designs. Not that these look great, but I imagined much worse. Especially after the trend of bastardizing the character art in so many CGI flicks. Scooby Doo, Alvin & the Chipmunks, Garfield, etc. I really was expecting them to go more photorealistic on Yogi & Boo-Boo. So, it’s kind of a nice surprise that they are at least trying to stay true to the HB designs. They don’t translate too well in CGI though. All I can hope is that they look better in motion, or that the designs have been further improved.

Can’t say I’m all that excited by the voice artists, but oh well…

Zartok-35 says:

“Warner Bros. requested that The Movie Insider remove the early rendering of Yogi Bear because the art is not final. The movie recently finished shooting in New Zealand and is in post-production. We will update photos when Warner Bros releases the official versions.”
