Buy The Lost Love Letters of Hugh Harman

Hugh Harman

Dozens of love letters belonging to director and animator Hugh Harman have turned up on eBay. For those who are unfamiliar with the name, Hugh Harman was a legendary figure in animation history. The starting bid for the letters is $2,000 which I think is a bit overpriced considering they’re from the 1940s after Harman had already made his biggest contributions to cartoons. I’d also assume the likelihood of new animation history revelations to be low. However, it’s an interesting find for the animation buff who likes a little romance on the side.

  • The person listing the letters is a bit confused about animation history:

“Hugh Harman~Cartoon animator. A pioneer in animation, he helped create Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny among other Looney tunes characters.”

Confusing the fact that Hugh Harman and Rudy Ising initiated the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies series for Schlesinger , but were long gone by the time Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny were created.

  • Interesting that a good portion of the letters came from the old Park Central Hotel. The penthouse of the hotel was the future home to Jackie Gleason’s production company, and then later Buzzco & Fred/Alan. (The ground floor barbershop was also where Murder Inc.’s Albert Anastasia was gunned down. . .)

Aww, the first picture has “CENSORSHIP” all over it.

We may not learn a lot about Hugh’s animation work, but these are still great finds anyway.

  • the boobie doodle with x nips and the note: “Very extra special kisses for the lovely little Rosebuds” is a cute touch. ( x )( x )

…seems a little creepy to be buying/selling something so personal.

Yeah, doesn’t it? That was my first reaction before I read the post.

    Dear Honey,

Maybe we oughtta sell OUR old love letters. Oh, don’t tell me—you threw them in the RIVER last time we broke up. Banana oil! I spiked Wilbur’s choc’late phosphate and put HIM in the sack instead of the letters. Havent you noticed how peaceful and quiet it’s been lately?

  • Mark Sonntag

Bit steep unless there is stuff about his work in there. Good luck getting that price.
