Epic Mickey’s lost and forgotten characters

Yet another intriguing viral going behind the scenes of Warren Spector’s forthcoming video game Epic Mickey. This one discusses the use of Horace Horsecollar, Gremlin Gus, Peg Leg Pete and others:

(Thanks, Matthew Gaastra)

  • I hardly thought of Pete as a forgotten character. He’s been consistently cast in projects up to the present day. Sometimes, like in “Three Musketeers”, he’s the best thing in them.

But I’m glad they didn’t forget him for this one.

    • Chris Sobieniak

Yeah, I was reminding myself he was in Kingdom Hearts as well.

  • JDW

i like how he talks about not using character from after the 60s… yet at like 2:43 there’s clearly a TRON world. Not that that’s an issue, TRON is great, but it’s very contradictory to his statement.

    • Well, still a TRON ambient makes sense to his statement… is not characters that he is using from that movie.

  • Wow, I’d love to work with those Maya rigs!
I wonder if they’d ever consider putting them out on the market

  • I was very conservative at first with all the fuzz about Epic Mickey, but by watching Mr. Spector’s love for animation in every promo video they have released, I think I’ll buy it (or at least, give the game a chance).

Anybody knows if Clara Cluck is in the game? With such a big range of obscure characters, I hope she’s around :D

    • DonaldC

I think I saw her in one of the previews.

  • Scarabim

Oh man, the more I see of this game, the more I love it, and the more impressed I am about the care and imagination that went into the making of it.

This could be the best thing Disney’s done in years. I love the theme music, the storyline, vintage Mickey, the return of Oswald, the inclusion of cast-off characters like Horace Horsecollar, (and Clarabelle’s even got her tail back!) and the Wasteland. If this game’s a hit, then Disney should definitely consider making a movie about it. In 2D AND CGI. It could be…well…epic.

    • Rubber Chicken Circuit

It’s strange that Disney should be putting out a game where they formally declare Horace and Clarabelle to be lost or forgotten characters.

They’re all over the modern Disney comic books and Clarabelle is often in the CGI preschool Mickey Mouse Clubhouse series too. I guess the Epic Mickey team didn’t realize this. It’s not good synergy to treat a character as forgotten when the rest of your company is still actively using her.

      • Stephan

Yeah, but you’re never going to get a “Horace Horse Golden Collection” DVD. He was forgotten as soon as he hit the screen.

      • TheGunheart

Plus, he did specify the black and white versions of them, and referred to the color versions as apparently separate characters that replaced the originals.

  • mat

That girl cat near the end is oswalds girlfriend right?

    • Mac

Yep, that’s Sadie who was Oswald’s girlfriend in later entries of the Disney series. In one of the sketches in that video I noticed Fanny – a rabbit who was Oswald’s girlfriend in his earlier cartoons. I wonder if they’re both in the game and if a back story has been invented about Oswald’s relationships?

  • Is it just me or did anyone else think “Bob Clampett” when they saw the gremlins?

    • Stephan

      Or Road Dahl.

  • Ron

Looks awesome. I’m gonna buy a wii just so I can play this game. I especially love the 2D stuff. If they make a show out of this concept, I hope it will look like that.

  • Andyman

I thought this game was about the Phantom Blot and other forgotten (thrown away) Disney characters. Clarabelle Cow and even Horace Horsecollar showed up on “House of Mouse” from time to time.

  • those 2d cutscenes look great. love the idea behind this game though I dont think it will put Mickey on the level of Mario. Film is mickeys medium, I dont see them bringing anything new to the video game world with this, besides an interesting story.

Whats with the cyborg donald, goofy and daisy? what are they from?

And can I get a little Brer rabbit, fox and bear please?

    • FigmentJedi

The Disneybots were built by Oswald out of his obsession to imitate Mickey’s life. Which extends to that Toontown inspired area.

  • Anonymous

Cyborg Donald, Goofy, Daisy, &c. aren’t “forgotten characters” from what I’ve read, but instead just an example of Oswald’s really weird love-hate relationship with Mickey. Built himself his own copies of the gang to one-up the mouse, I think.

  • purin

Lots of Pete, and hearts and the loss of hearts as story themes? I’m getting some Kingdom Hearts vibes…

  • There was an episode of Tiny Toon Adventures entitled “Fields of Honey.” (it was one of the better episodes in my oppinion) Anyway, there was a concept in the episode about how laughter keeps a Toon young. Somehow, I think that would have been an interesting concept to impliment into this game.

I will have to buy this game at one point. If for nothing else, the story. I love all those characters, and am glad that they’re being used.

    • Stephan

Come on though. They’re Disney character. They’re kept alive by honest to goodness smiles and inner warmth!

  • Matt

Watching all of these Epic Mickey videos, although they’re all really cool, and do a great homage to the history of Mickey.
I just can’t help but feel that this game is being really over hyped.
    Really really over hyped.

Maybe that’s just how marketing is with everything today today, but I just wish that they didn’t have to put all that money into pushing the product so much.
Rather just work on the actual game so that it’d be good enough to sell it’s self.

  • Rooniman

Warren Spector is now my new hero.

  • AaronSch

I am not a video game enthusiast but I’ll be picking this one up for sure. My curiosity has peaked.

  • Looks fun. Kinda reminds me of what I liked about Rayman 2. I dunno if these guys are considered forgotten but will Jose and Panchito be showing up? :)
