Mr Bug Goes to Town

Just a quick heads-up that I’ll be introducing a double feature Max Fleischer’s two great animated features, Gulliver’s Travels (1939) and Mr. Bug Goes To Town (1941) at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California on Friday September 25th. Both will be presented in 35mm, with uncut IB Technicolor prints projected on the large screen, just as they were meant to be seen. Mark your calendar now! More details about this event will be posted when we get closer to the actual date.

I hope you all have a great time!

That is Fantastic news! Two greats that also need a proper DVD release. Years ago John K. screened a restored print of Popeye meets Sinbad the Sailor at the Egyptian Theater in hollywood and it looked Beautiful! Look forward to seeing these!

Any chance you can take this show on the road to Tennessee?
Oh well, worth a try.

Just finished reading The Fleischer Story by Leslie Carbaga, gave me a new appreciation for these two films.

I want to go badly! But i’m too far away!

Robert Barker says:

Although Gulliver is the better known film, Mr. Bug is an under appreciated gem. There are some cool special effects and there’s a related vibe with the Superman cartoons the Fleischers were also animating at the time.

Paul J. Mular says:

I had the fortune of seeing a 35mm IB Technicolor print in the 1980’s at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland California, and that theater is Grand!

The 35mm technicolor print was beautiful. Such richness & detail! The only flaw the print I saw was that NTA had spliced some Eastmancolor 35mm logos where the Paramount logos should have been. I remember when the lights went down & the Pink NTA came on the screen, I felt a let down. Then it jumped to perfect color technicolor title cards & you could hear all of the film collectors whispering “This is IB Technicolor!”. I always hoped those 35mm prints had survived the past 20 years since I saw them.

Those attending will be in for a treat!

I love living in Burbank. ^.^

I have both of these on Laserdisc, and still pull ‘em out on occasion to show folks who’ve never seen them before .. but I’ve never seen ‘em in theaters, let alone in 35mm.

.. better believe I’ll be there!

ditto the big sighs from the east coast…

A big sigh from Denver! This sounds like a fantastic show. I have wanted to see both films on the big screen for a very long time.

…and Saskatchewan, Canada (sigh)…

Oscar Q. says:

After the atrocity that got put out on blu-ray of Gulliver’s Travels, I wish I could go to this just to see how much Gulliver’s Travels got screwed on blu-ray!

Oscar Q .. the ‘60th Anniversary Limited Edition’ DVD released by Winstar in 2001 boasts perhaps the best-quality transfer of GULLIVER’S TRAVELS on home video. It can still be found in some stores, or ‘online’ from resellers on Amazon.com ..

.. though, certainly even that disc would seem ‘pale’ by comparison with 35mm IB Technicolor ..
