Rare Terrytoon photos

That’s Gene Deitch (left) examining cels of Bert and Harry Piels (of the famed Piels Beer commercials) with director Connie Rasinski in 1957.

J.J. Sedelmaier recently unearthed several rare photographs depicting behind the scenes life at Terrytoons during the Deitch era (1955-57). They have been added to Deitch’s online book, How To Succeed in Animation. You can see these pictures in Chapter 15A (”Terrytoonery”) on Page 8 (shots of Vinnie Bell, Bob Kuwahara, and Connie Rasinski), page 10 (photo of background artist Bill Focht) and on page 11 (rare pictures of Jules Feiffer, Eli Bauer, Frank Schudde, a recording session of Tom Terrific with Lionel Wilson and Tommy Morrison, and the only known photo of “the Dark Lord”, Bill Weiss!).

	These Gene Deitch-era Terrytoons facinates me, so thank you for posting these. I forgot Terrytoons employed Jules Feiffer at one point. I wonder how many Terrytoons animators imagined that he would win a Pulitzer years later.

	I recently picked up a box set of Gene Deitch’s Krazy Kat cartoons from the early 60’s. I have fond memories of them from my childhood, and it was great to get the set, especially at a deep discount. They’re not classic cartoons by any means, but they’re significantly better than a lot of stuff being produced today.

	When I was a kid here in La, Terrytoons was something I just endured until Bugs Bunny came on at 3 pm. The big treat was Tom and Jerry/MGM cartoons which came on at 4pm. I never liked Terrytoons. Nothing about anything they made or any of the characters resonated with me. Even at the age of 12 I knew there was a WORLD of difference between Heckle and Jeckle and the fantastic “World of Tomorrow” and “The Cat Who Hated People” cartoons I had to wait until after 4 to watch. Come on..some of ya here gotta agree with me. :) Wasn’t there some sad “trunk sucking” elephant named Sydney on Terrytoons? Ugh. Nightmare material. I still like looking at old studio photos though..they’re really inspirational, no matter where they were taken.

	Terrytoons wasn’t “quality” by any means, but some cartoons from the Golden Age were what I can call “guilty pleasures.” Tom Terrific was a childhood favorite of mine which I’ve rediscovered over the past three years (thank in largest part to Jerry), so I’m not holding Terrytoons to the lowest esteem many enthusiasts do. Not on the level of M-G-M Avery or Warners, but not the lowest, either.

	I worked for Terrytunes in the late 30’s, we had some talented artists on board. I knew Connie Razinski and ” Sparky” Schudde was my supervisor. Paul Terry used to give the whole gang a great Christmas party, I made $17 aweek includung 1/2 day on Sat. But what a lot of fun it was working there!
