Michael Sporn’s Splog is a daily must-read for anyone interested in cartoons, their history and the experiences of a life-long New York independent animator. Today, Michael posts several vintage articles on the old Terrytoons studio based in New Rochelle, NY.

I want to thank Mike for giving me an excuse to post this fun TV commercial from the mid-1950s, below, featuring future Oscar winner Patty Duke playing with a Remco toy Drive-In Movie Theatre — which came complete with Terrytoons:

Cute.
I like how the boy at the end never blinks.

haha, the kid’s reaction at :57 after saying “remember, every boy wants a Remco toy” is my favorite part.

I can’t possibly love this any more than I do. Very cool!

OMG. My cousins had one of those when I was little. I was so jealous. I remember the toy. Did it just show stills? I’ll bet one of those in good shpe would be costly. Cool.

This Remco toy regularly goes for big $$$ on eBay. I’m not sure modern audiences would even know what a Drive-In was. Given their notorious “passion pit” reputation at the time, though – it gives new meaning to Patty Duke’s knowing camera wink at the end, (“…And so do girls!”)

This would make a great subversive SNL commercial parody, with adult comics playing the kids. What starts out as innocent role-playing reenacting Heckle & Jeckle cartoons quickly degenerates into a frenzied make-out, ending up under the table! With Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri, or their modern equivalents…

I adore it!!! Than Q!!

One of my favorite toys as a kid. Yep, it just showed little film strips (stills), mostly of Terrytoons characters and other CBS properties, like Captain Kangaroo. The material seemed like it was specifically drawn or created for the toy.

Patty Duke was a little charmer back then.

$5.98 in 1955 = $47.57 in 2008
Looks well worth it.

I never saw one of these in person, but I do remember the ads. Maybe that’s why I bought a VCR almost as soon as they became available.

LOVE IT. Never heard of this toy – what a natural. Great stuff. Thanks!

If only they added “Perry Mason” and Gandy Goose, or “Gunsmoke” and Kiko the Kangaroo.

I *ALWAYS* coveted that toy! Thanks for the memories! I was only blessed with playing with it ONCE, at a distant relative’s house. Yet I remember that playdate like it was yesterday.
I must have been about 3 or 4 and he was 8 or 9.
