Though the 1930s Popeye Club was way before my time, I am old enough to remember watching him in the lates 60s/early 70s on WPIX Channel 11 hosted by ‘Captain’ Jack McCarthy–those were the days too!
Terrific stuff there. In 1957, Atlanta TV station WSB/ch. 2 had a weekday afternoon show called “The Popeye Club,” hosted by Don Kennedy (as “Officer Don”), and it ran for 12 years. At first they ran the Fleischer and Paramount/Famous cartoons (all with the infamous A.A.P. tags) but by 1960s, those cartoons were relegated to weekends as the Brodax cartoons were now featured weekdays.

In NYC, Channel 11 had the Fleischer/Famous A.A.P. package & sometime in the late 70s just as Ch. 11 (at this point calling themselves 11 Alive) were dropping the classic Popeye cartoons, WNEW Metromedia Channel 5 (now WNYW Fox) began showing the King Features series. There were no classic Popeye cartoons shown in NYC until the late 1980s when WWOR Ch. 9 picked up the Turner colorized package.
By the way, “The Prisoner of Shark Island”, a 1936 movie starring a way-, way-pre-Titanic Gloria Stuart and featured on one of the Popeye Club posters, is airing on TCM tonight (Monday the 10th). So pop in a Popeye DVD before the feature and you’re there.
