The Twelve Animated Days of Christmas, #11
December 24, 2008 12:45 am
Directed by Bill Melendez, this is the 1974 Emmy Award-winning special Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Clause. Melendez’s years of working on the animated Peanuts cartoons is really evident in his approach to the design and animation of this special.

The narrator kinda sounds like Walt Disney. It’s not obviously, but it still drew me in because of that. I doubt it was intentional, but it would be cool for Disney themselves to try something like that. Or it could just be I stayed up too late again…
Now, there’s a Christmas specoial you don’t see much any more! “Little” Jimmy Osmond, too! The animation could be best described as half-vintage “Peanuts”, half-school educational. He lives!
Merry Christmas, everybody!
p.s. – Tristan – that’s Jim Backus (aka Thurston Howell III and Mr. Magoo)!
Virginia is voiced by Courtney Lemmon, daughter of Jack Lemmon and Felicia Farr. And the Asian father in the first segment (“Little grasshopper…”) is voiced by Louis Nye, of all people!
This needs to be released on DVD along with Richard Williams 1971 animated adaptation of A Christmas Carol!
This is classic! Why doesn’t it air?
