Mutts goes Fleischer

I don’t know where Patrick McDonnell is going with this week’s continuity in his Mutts comic strip – but I like it.

Wow, not a bad Popeye at all! Very Cool!

Mutts reminds me of a modern day Beetle Bailey/Hi and Lois/Hagar the Horrible in that the same concepts are abused over and over again. You can string the same squirrels with acorns bit over and over again but it still isn’t funny. I’d love to see Stephan Pastis’ Pearls Before Swine take on this strip (or Darrin Bell’s Candorville).

    Now that’s funny!

Dare I suggest that MUTTS deserves to be mentioned in any top 10 comic strips of all time list? Honestly, I really think it is that good!

MUTTS is one of the best syndicated comics around today!!

Mutts is my second favorite strip in the miserably small comics section in the Houston Chronicle, my first is, of course, Peanuts. I wish I had been able to get my hands on these, now they’re somewhere folded up to the crossword.

I guess not all people think alike. I will give the strip credit though for the design.

I despise Mutts. The cat that talks like Sylvester is such a blatant steal that I have no choice but to spill a bit of coffee on the strip every morning lest my eyes accidentally wander its way. As for Peanuts…sadly, it hasn’t aged very well…my faves are Pearls Before Swine, Dilbert, and Get Fuzzy (although I wish the artist would redesign that cat. The dog and the guy look good, but that cat looks horrible).

    Terrific!

At the very least this toon might encourage a youthful reader to look up Popeye and Betty Boop and find out there are more cartoons out there than South Park and The Simpsons.

    Def. my favorite Mutts strip.

I agree with Jason: Mutts sucks. This post proves the fact that it’s only worth mentioning if it rips off famous characters and sticks them in the strip. The way that cat talks is so annoying, and there is not a single funny thing that happens in that strip – ever.

You know, I really like the artwork, but on what planet are those particular strips funny? WTF?

  • brendan

The artwork is pretty good.. I guess.

I don’t know. I think Mutt is one of the worst comics out there- and just because they threw classic cartoons into it, that doesn’t make it an entertaining comic. In my personal opinion, I think this is a cheap and easy way for the artist to easily get new readers.
