Among the slim pickings this week: Rhymes with Orange (4/17/10) by Hilary Price; Blondie (4/13/10) by Dean Young and John Marshall; and My Cage (4/17/10) by Ed Power and Melissa DeJesus.

That is an extremely jealous paramecium.

Evidence that “Blondie” takes place in the 1950s #135,264,242,736:

Their theater still runs the “Let’s All Go to the Lobby” commercial.

The second one is… Well, a Blondie gag that could’ve been done any day in the past 50 years. Typical of that strip. The latter one is a great demonstration of how to blow a joke; the cartoonist takes what COULD have been a nice sight gag and ruins it. As for the first one, well, we’ve seen Hilary’s work before. She is missing her true calling in life, which is to be doing something – ANYTHING – other than drawing.

At least someone still remembers those fine intermission films!

I thought Popeye was toothless.

“I thought Popeye was toothless.”

Yes, you are correct. But in some of the later cartoons he has teeth and even has two eyes. (He even has teeth on the images on the popeye.com website.)

That last one is crap.

Scott says:

That first one was a Far Side almost exactly.

DJM says:

@Scott: And the Far Side was pretty much nothing but dumb downed B. Kliban rip-offs

That Popeye joke is a very easy one to think up on your own without realizing someone else has already done it. Still, it’s not that funny.

Thanks for the mention!

We aim for being slim pickings! ;)

In fact, my hope is that all comics worsen so we don’t have to imporve. :D :D :D

But seriously, thanks (even to you Rooniman). See you next time we mention animation!

Is all the snippiness around here really necessary? Really? Come on.
