It’s a stinky batch, to be sure, but “Medium Large” (6/21) by Francesco Marciuliano redeems your efforts. Fucking brilliant.
The Three Little Pigs one was funny!
I actually think there are some good ones here. And they are not the Medium Large one, which is ok, but the drawing is pretty lousy for a joke about artistic merits.
I enjoy the Argyle Sweater one, both from Off the mark and the last two.
I’ve never heard of it but Moderately confused seems decent, both jokes are enjoyable and the drawings are nice.

“The Popeye Diaries”? Please, don’t give the CW any ideas!!
First one made me smirk.
Most of the other ones seem to lack an actual joke.

Funny what can pass off as “funny” these days.
Medium Large speaks the truth.
I like the Dumbo one, the others are terrible.
This is one of those times that I laughed in surprise at Argyle Sweater. The strip definitely has its highs and lows, but this is undeniably a great visual joke — you can subtract the words and it’s just as funny even if you don’t understand what’s going on. In fact, I’d like to see what the New Yorker could get if they put this one up for a “fill in the word balloon” contest. Here’s my pretend-submissions:
1. “Good news, dear, I’m going back to biology school! I’ve finally got an idea for a thesis! ‘The Unexpected Importance of Echolocation in Pachydermata’.”
2. “Yeah, it’s a real shame. His last hope must have been a comeback sequel after ‘Princess and the Frog’ did well. Poor little guy.”
3. “Hi, Jim? You got any more Scotch tape in that supply closet?”

Terrible all. Although I like the sentiments of the first one.
I liked the oil spill one! I also liked the one with Shrek and Woody! The others are okay. I’m guessing the first one is the reason why Shrek Forever After (Which was actually a lot better than Shrek the Third) and Toy Story 3 (Which was awesome) both came out this year.
Pardon me, I believe I read some meta into that comic strip that wasn’t there. Is it just another “Dreamworks sucks” and NOT “Who are you kidding, Dreamworks and Pixar BOTH suck”?? Then fuggit.
While I thought Toy Story 3 was better than Shrek: Forever After, I actually thought the latter had some “authentic emotion” and “storytelling” even though some gags and one-liners were hit-or-miss that didn’t contribute much of “integrity”. (I’m particularly referring to when that goose who was Rumplestilskin’s stooge was killed and everyone laughed even though he didn’t really harm anyone). Besides, with How to Train Your Dragon, Dreamworks Animation seems to be on its way to being on par with Pixar…
The whole Shrek vs. Toy Story argument is unwarranted IMO. The first Shrek had an excellent story, with a clever twist on the princess-finds-her-prince story (a hell of a lot better twist than had Disney’s Princess and the Frog), and it had something to say about inner vs. outer beauty as well. Shrek 2 was fine and had a reason for being, and while Shrek 3 was completely unnecessary, the franchise was at least somewhat redeemed by Shrek 4. As for Toy Story 3…look, I liked it, it had dazzling animation and solid production values, but it pushed the toys-in-peril envelope a little too hard for my tastes. It’s just a little too easy to make people cry about kids growing up, outgrowing toys, leaving the nest, toys getting discarded, and so on. And Pixar hit on every one of those emotional flashpoints with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. While I admire the film’s many strong points, I really feel no need to rewatch it, and that’s a first for me for the Toy Story films. But I’m very very glad it’s doing so well at the box office. It deserves it, especially given the mostly-dreck we’ve been getting for our moviegoing dollars so far this year.
Oh yeah, the comics. I liked all of them except the first one , the Popeye diaries one and the one about Disney World, which didn’t really have a joke in it. Thanks for posting comics that comment on animated cartoons, by the way, Jerry. It’s a lot of fun reading them, even if some of them are duds.
First comic: Is that Shrek? Shrek doesn’t look like that, he’s fat.
Second comic: Darth Vader would just clean himself with the force.
Third comic: Dumbo wouldn’t do that. He’s a flying elephant, not a bird.
Fourth comic: Stupid.
Fifth comic: Ha ha, she had sex with Mickey Mouse I guess.
Sixth comic: Wait, so Dumbo’s alive? And listening to “easy listening” because he has big ears or something? That’s stupid. Also Smurfs don’t have ipods.
Seventh comic: I don’t get it.
Eighth comic: Why did Superman’s super vision fail? I don’t see any Kryptonite. That’s stupid.
Ninth comic: The Big Bad Wolf isn’t looking for a house, he wants to eat them. That pig is an idiot.
Just had to say that I liked the “Popeye Diaries” one, even though I seem to be alone in that opinion. Argyle Sweater was pretty good this week, the rest OK.
Oh, and Casper’s taste in music made me chuckle.
Wow. Usually I can find one of these funny, but this week’s collection is truly craptastic.
I guess if I had to choose one of them at gunpoint, I’d pick the Three Little Pigs cartoon as being at least sort of funny, in a day late, dollar short, kinda way.
I loved this batch, even if the Medium Large’s DW stab might’ve been a bit uncalled for. What Are You Listening To? is very clever.
If even comic “strips” are down to doing one-panel gags, the end can’t be far off.
The Shrek and Woody comic is funny because it’s true.
The Popeye one looks like Corto Maltese! (Not to say that most any of these could compare to this.) And this What Are You Listening to is the kind of awful, awful, awful but perfect humour that I at least appreciate as a guilty pleasure…
The Popeye Diaries? Hahaha! I would watch that.
