Disney Art at NOMA

Here’s an early heads up, The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) will host a special installation of Disney animation art on November 15th to tie-in with the release of The Princess And The Frog. Dreams Come True: Art of the Classic Fairy Tales from the Walt Disney Studio will present over 600 pieces of original production art, displayed in separate rooms dedicated exclusively to Silly Symphonies, Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and The Princess and the Frog. This special exhibit will only be in New Orleans from Nov 15 to March 15, 2010 (there will be a fundraising gala on Saturday evening, November 14th). For more information check the NOMA website. |

Consider me y’all’s correspondent on this event. (And it opens on my birthday at that!) If we can’t get the Princess and the Frog movie to premiere here in the city it takes place in…at least they sent us a consolation prize of sorts. Ah well…I’ll be glad to share any and all info once it get’s underway.

Uncle Wayne, where would you most likely be throwin down? I have heard a rumor that a special screening may be in your neck of the woods. Though not much for traveling these days, if it’s funky enough, we could show – via high octane road trip from Tennessee.

Hello to “jwlane”! That’s the 2nd time today that i’ve heard that phrase “throwin’ down” (The first time was from my gf!) I’m not quite sure what that even means (lol!)….but I live in N.O. But I was told (by a “Princess” animator), that….no…it (the premiere) is NOT here! So, yes, Eddie is right….that IS a great “consolation prize!”

An accompanying exhibition catalogue would be nice.
Putting together the art from some Silly Symphonies, Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty makes sense, of course.
But following them with Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast (though it serves the revisionnist agenda of The Walt Disney Company) is a very bad idea, as those modern movies can only suffer from the comparison. But I guess we will read and hear the usual accolades of how Beauty and the Beast is a masterpiece ( ?) equal to the classics (in the true sense of the word, not the « Disney » sense).
No comment about The Princess and the Frog, as I haven’t seen the movie.
And if you really need a reason to visit New Orleans, Mardi Gras day is February 16th, 2010. How’s that for convenient?
Being a slightly transplanted New Orleans native (I’m 300 miles east of the city now) I will definitely be making the exhibition, probably when I’m staying in the city prior to my annual pilgrimage to Las Vegas in January. As for Mardi Gras, NOMA is usually closed (along with most of the city) on that day (NOMA is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and legal holidays).
