Frank & Artie

What’s wrong with the following sentence in this Andreas Deja interview: “I got to know, not only Marc Davis, but Frank Thomas, Artie Johnson, Ward Kimball, all these great animators, and just ask them all these questions about how they did certain things, what their trials and errors were, the ups and downs.”

Then again, the same article also doesn’t spell Rodin properly so it’s probably asking them too much to do the most basic research about animation history.

Ruth Buzzi could animate circles around Artie Johnson!!

Jones says:

You don’t remember Artie Johnson? He was one of the Seven Aged Fellows who worked for Wilt Dinsee.

03/19/08  1:08pm

Very interestingggg! I’m sure Ollie wouldn’t find this a ‘Laugh In’ matter!

03/19/08  1:11pm

Actually, I worked with Artie Johnson as well.

Except it was at NBC, not Disney - - on the set of “Laugh In.”

Very interesting. . .

03/19/08  1:13pm

Hmmmmm. Verrrrrrrry Interestink.

Stop complaining Amir.

Bummer. Deja didn’t name even one of the Nine New Men. I was really looking forward to that.

If you want correct spelling it’s “Arte” Johnson.

Keith Paynter says:

“Ruth Buzzi could animate circles around Artie Johnson!!”
…and she carries a mean handbag!

But I’d bet on Artie Johnson in a tricycle race any day!

Keith Paynter says:

p.s. - didn’t Marc Davis sing “Oh Lord, It’s Hard To Be Humble?” :)

Are you going to tell us who the heck those guys are, or am I going to have to go to Wikipedia?

I’ve always thought that “famous animator” was a bit of an oxymoron.

Andrew says:

It’s not a big deal. It would be one thing if the interview got a very well-known animation fact completely inaccurate. A spelling error is quite another, and who knows whether or not they misspelled his name, or if they are indeed oblivious to his real name.

Movieweb’s always had a clear pro-Artie Johnson bias. I’m surprised it hasn’t been picked up earlier.

My local paper ran a story about Ratatouille producer Brad Lewis just before the Oscars (he’s also the mayor of a neighboring town). In the article, the reporter wrote that Lewis has previously worked on “Antz” for Pixar…

A couple weeks ago, an article in the Atlanta Creative Loafing stated that DesiLu Studios was created by Lucille Ball and her husband Ricky Ricardo… I wonder if anyone at these papers bothers reading the articles before sending them to the press.

Anyone else remember “Baggy Pants and the Nitwits”, the DePatie- Freleng production where Johnson and Buzzi reprised their roles of Tyrone and Gladys from “Laugh-In”.

greg m says:

Man, some of us are showing our age here!!! Laugh-in!!

03/20/08  11:51am
Chuck R. says:

top cat: Yes! —but I can’t say I remember it fondly. At the time, I knew Baggy Pants was based on Charlie Chaplin, but it was only much later that I learned where Tyrone and Gladys came from.

Arte Johnson was actually awarded a creator credit. The earliest episodes of the show had to have a network VO guy read the credit line, but eventually Art Leonardi added it to the title sequence.
