Grizzly Flats Rides Again!

Animator Ward Kimball’s famed Chloe locomotive was on the move recently to Yorba Linda, CA for the annual Holiday Festival of Trains at the Nixon Library. The steam engine, along with a model representation of Kimball’s whimsical Grizzly Flats Railroad, is on display through this Sunday, January 10, 2010. Featured are two huge layouts of operating model trains. Also showing on two giant flat-screen monitors are rare home movies of Walt Disney’s 1948 trip to the Chicago Railroad Fair and the work that went into creating the Chloe locomotive during the 1950s. The home movies of Walt Disney at the 1948 Chicago Railroad Fair are from the Kimball family and have never been shown in their entirety to the public. The Nixon library is fascinating regardless of politics. You get all the artifacts, the family house, and gravesite all in one. What a deal!

It seems like just yesterday (in the early eighties) when I used to go to the annual Christmas show at Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge, CA.

At the Boddy House, the small mansion in the center of the garden, they would decorate each room with elaborate Christmas trees and sumptuous Victorian furniture. In the very last room, the one you passed through just before you left, they had a large toy train layout on display. And presiding over it, wearing an engineer’s hat and sporting a Cheshire Cat grin, was none other than Ward Kimball, the owner of the model trains. I think I still have some home video of him. I’ll try to dig it up and post it somewhere.
Boy, do I miss those days.

I think Ward wouldn’t like his train to be at something for Nixon. Milt Kahl, his arch enemy, probably thought Nixon was too liberal.
Ward was a former president of the Train Collectors Association (TCA) and a member of its Western Division, which put this train show together. I think he would have rather liked the event.
I’ll bet Ward would have had a good laugh if he had known his Chloe locomotive would be parked next to the helicopter that took Nixon away from the White House on August 9, 1974, the day the President of the United States resigned.
