A “self-propelled action bed” from a company called “Horsman”? Discuss.

(Thanks, Dave Pruiksma)

“Self Propelled Action Bed”

sounds like something Adam West Batman would use

FP says:

It evokes ALL IN THE FAMILY: specifically, the episode in which Archie mentions the bed Mike and Gloria ‘do sex’ on has wheels. “It’s like the Indianapolis 500 down there”. Apologies for an inaccurate quote. It’s been 39 years and I have no time to GOOGLE.

By the self propelled action chair NOW!
and the innuendos are free.

I don’t know what’s worse; the concept of a vibrating, moving bed or the “Angela Landsbury Barbie” (complete with go-go boots) that appears to be chained to it.

emily says:

Hahahahahahahahaha! Yes, this is indeed a bad one. Angela Lansbury has never before looked so…Barbie. Thanks Jerry!

I’ve been having a propelled bed for years!!

And i thank God every DAY for that, too!!

Jenny says:

How cool! I suspect this is far from the worst there is. But hey, you’ve got to start somewhere. But just to be devil’s advocate here: I used to pretend along with my best friend that her brass bed would fly us around at night (we devoured Mary Norton’s book which is excellent-she’s a great author) so I would have loved this thing as a kid. Though in no way would I buy that that was Angela Lansbury’s character. I’d probably have replaced her with Gumby.

Matthew Gerber says:

Actually, I think that’s a pretty darned clever toy for 1971. Using the standard bump-and-go technology to recreate the bed seems to be pretty outside-the-box thinking for a doll company. A quick Google shows them to have been pretty savvy regarding licensing too, in times where the idea was relatively new through the beginning of the hot licensing trends of the ’70s.

I use a mystery action to prevent myself from falling off the table, just like this.

06/8/09  5:19pm

Nice!

Mike Fontanelli says:

“Changes direction on contact”? Um, what kind of contact are we talking about, exactly? Funny, but I always thought the title “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” was plenty suggestive enough!

06/8/09  6:07pm

This is actually fantastic and I want it. I think it was also sold with slight alterations as a tie-in for “This Property Is Condemned”! ;)

Jason says:

Huh. That tarted-up doll in a vibrating bed gives the term “Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang” a whole new meaning…

06/8/09  7:12pm

Ohhh take it away
take it away!
unpost it!
its hurting my eyes!

06/8/09  7:18pm

I love this toy. Every one I have ever seen was hundreds of dollars or I would have bought it. I am sure it was a complete flop at retail in 1971 but the failures always seem to take on mystique with the passage of time.

Has everyone forgotten about the Old Yeller Dog Food?!

“ACTION BED” HA HA…. Reminds me of college day’s! What an interesting name for a child’s toy…. Sounds like something you’d find at the “CANDY STORE”

Pedro Nakama says:

This is an incomplete story Jerry. Buy the bed and video it racing around the floor. Dub the music from the film on the tape. Post it on You Tube.

What a tragedy this wasn’t used as a merchandising tie-in for “The Exorcist”…

Donald Benson says:

Nice, but save a place of honor for the WDW Main Street Playset — a Sears Exclusive! Images of this wonder and of the Sears catalog pages are easily googled.

The elaborate cardboard & plastic set included four buildings with a simple cutout of the castle, and the interiors were designed as WDW souvenir shops instead of old-fashioned businesses.

The many optional accessories included little costumed characters (like Winnie the Pooh with the hunny pot on his head), assorted modern tourists, little working streetlights, some Christmas decorations and a feeble version of the WDW Railroad — without a station. And no, they didn’t expand this idea to include any actual rides or lands.

Watching this bed bump into walls had to be more exciting than playing Let’s Buy Souvenirs.

Andy says:

I have an old “Bloopers” record which has a radio spot for a “Davy Crockett” bed. I s**t you not, the tag-line is “…there’s lots of exciting pictures of Davy Crockett in action on the mattress”!

Randy Koger says:

Just FYI….Horsman was a very successful doll maker/toy company.

06/9/09  6:48am

This looks like a rip-off to me. In 30 years my bed has rarely fallen off the table, and it lacks pretty much any kind of action, mystery or otherwise.

Aerial Flyer says:

What is it with Cartoon Brew and “Disney” posts?? Is the world of animation only “Disney” or “west coast” oriented?

There’s a heck of alot of good stuff all over the world, where’s their news?

Chris Sobieniak says:

Thanks Jerry, I needed a good laugh today!

06/10/09  10:33am

I’d buy it!
